Measurement units

https://forums.garmin.com/apps-software/mobile-apps-web/f/garmin-connect-web/54269/measurement-units

Per this 13yr old post, I'd request that Garmin Connect Web and Garmin Connect App, please consider implementing user configurable custom units of measure for every recorded metric type.

This is implemented correctly on my FR965, unit types for weight/height/distance can all be selected

So as you can see, this is not breaking new ground.

I'd like to see Garmin support seriously consider examining this request, send it up the chain to acquire a resource and follow through. This is low hanging fruit given the code is already written and owned by Garmin - it just has to be ported from one platform to another. This would help to bring Garmin connect more in line with industry standard health tracking applications which already have this standard user Ux feature.

  • Yeah, there's more than one 10+ year old thread about this. And ofc plenty of the usual suspects claiming it's not a problem (or misunderstanding the feature request).

If Americans used mixed units, this would've been a day one feature in Connect.

Canadians (and anyone else who uses mixed units) stay losing, I guess.

Anyway, this kind of request is supposed to go to the Garmin Ideas page, bc it would be crazy to have an official community site for feature requests, like Spotify or several other modern companies. Better to have a one-way black hole where you can't get feedback from Garmin, and nobody else can see, comment or vote on your idea.

  • I've added the point however, that they have the solution in hand on the watch firmware.  I'm sure they are separate development teams - they just need to be aware that the code exists with the firmware team.  I'm sure its not as easy as it looks on the surface to just port the code. The connect web and connect app I'm certain have a lot of code entry points to update and handle user configured values. I'm aware of the size of the ask, but its long overdue.

... .wait. I re-read your comment. You think these forums are a complete dead end?  I've gotten response and bugs handled in beta - forums perhaps co-incidentally within 72hrs. I'm of the opinion that if you are clear as possible and helpful without attitude, people tend to respond better. Slight smile

  • No, more that if you post a feature request, people (including Garmin employees) will invariably suggest that you submit an idea on the Garmin Ideas page (in some cases, with the implication that they don't think you should've posted it here in the first place). And I think it's the ideas page which is a one-way black hole. Garmin won't respond, others can't see your idea, and you can't see if anyone else has the same idea.

I actually like it when people post feature requests here, so there's visibility and discussion. I just don't have a lot of hope that some of them will ever be addressed. Especially this feature request (which has been around for more than 10 years) and the other perennial favorite - the ability to add arbitrarily-named custom exercises to the strength activity.

Otoh, Garmin has implemented some pretty decent stuff recently, like the ability to edit multiple strength sets at once (finally).

    > just port the code

I can't be sure ofc, but I would think that the code / architecture for Connect (app and website) is different enough from the code on the device that it wouldn't be question of porting at all, but simply implementing a completely new feature on the Connect side. I think that obviously it's not the most complex ask in the world, Garmin would just need to allocate the time and resources to do it. And who knows if the design of the existing code base is amenable to this feature request. (e.g. Would they have to change the code for every single screen that displays speed, distance, weight, height, etc.) It might be the kind of thing that's easier to implement on a completely new platform.

Personally I don't think that having a similar feature in the watch firmware makes it any easier to implement this request in Connect.

    > I'm of the opinion that if you are clear as possible and helpful without attitude, people tend to respond better

I think most people start out with that kind of approach, then they tend to sour after years of ignored bug reports and recurring bugs. Others go in the other direction and start denying every bug report, feature request and criticism of Garmin.

  • > It might be the kind of thing that's easier to implement on a completely new platform.

It might be cruel of me to accuse devs of laziness when their overlords likely have X new feature requirements in the pipeline on a compressed time line all with the overbearance of metrics and annual performance reviews.  Maintenance code is costly and has no sex appeal. Getting decision makers on board can be a hard sell.

.. but ultimately I just can't convey how hard it is to me to flip the switch on my scale to kg instead of lbs. Now if it showed BOTH that would be a fix. For me anyhow.
