connect.garmin.com had a little button on the bottom of activity pages to correct erroneous gps/barometer elevation by using map data instead.
But now this option is gone.
Is this a temporary glitch? When can I correct faulty gps elevation again?

This option should be available in the gear menu (top-right hand corner).
Is there any way to specify 'Your Device' as the default for new activities?
It should be the default if your device has a baro.
While it has a barometer, it's not a Garmin device. Defaults to survey data. No switch on the site I can find to flip...
If you're recording activities with a 3rd-party device and syncing them to Garmin Connect, then I would expect elevation corrections to applied automatically (as you said.)
I would guess that Garmin either doesn't know or doesn't care that the 3rd party device has a baro.
Yeah, my assumption also. It would be nice if we had some (any at all!) control over various default settings. Ah well. Cheers.
I'm using a Vivoactive 3. I too noticed that the option had disappeared from its location right under the display of my watch. BUT, since that happened my elevations are wildly inaccurate. (E.g., 11,000 feet ascent over a 10 mile bike ride that was only about 200 some feet.) I cleaned the barometric hole mentioned in one help thread, but it's still all wrong.
