Garmin Coach Walk laps recorded as Run

Hello, I'm new to running and I started a Walk/Run 5k Garmin Coach with Amy.

I am on week 2 and this is my current repeats as shown on my iPhone, as you can see I have 3 repeats: 5min walk / 2 min run

However, when I look at the same trainig plan on Garmin Connect Web it shows up as 5 min Run / 2 min Run, the same when the training is loaded on my Fenix 7X Solar Sapphire and so it is recorder as run/run in the end.

Connect Web

I don't know why some text is in Italian and some in English, but not consistently within the two platforms. To help you read it, "Corsa" is the Italian word for "Run".

Thank you

  • Perhpas just a translation problem. Try switching Garmin Connect Web to English and see what is the original. You can do that in the settings at https://connect.garmin.com/modern/settings/displayPreferences, and it won't impact the watch or the phone app.

  • Thank you trux. Unfortunately, even in English it shows up as "WALK/RUN REPEATS", notes: "walk, run and repeat" but the sections are Run/Run.

Moreover, when the training lands on the watch, the guided voice tell me to run on each lap

  • In that case, I recommend reporting the discrepancy to the Product Support through their website at https://support.garmin.com. Select "Garmin Connect" as the "product".

  • Interestingly if you create a Run workout manually in the Connect app or website, there is no option for a Walk step type (and there never has been in the past afaik.)

The only step types are: Warm Up, Run, Recover, Rest, Cool Down, Other

The same is true if you edit intervals on an activity after the fact: each lap can only be categorized as Warm Up, Run, Recover, Rest, Cool Down, Other.

So I'm thinking Garmin workouts don't really support a walk step in general, but Gamin Coach workouts have a way of displaying "Walk" as the step type in the app, and this ability isn't really supported by the rest of the infrastructure, including the device and the recorded activity.

(I think it's a deeper problem than just Connect. I think Garmin Coach workouts are more flexible than Garmin workouts in general.)

  • This is the part that drives me mad.

I'm sure that after the first walk/run session (session nr 2) I checked the uploaded activity and could see the laps breakdown by walk and run, with the ability to filter by type.

But If I scroll to my history they all looks run/run

Not sure about the laps, but at watches supporting the run/walk detection, the is the Run/Walk graph in Garmin Connect. Assuming it is enabled, and that the Run was not a part of a Multisport activity. For some reasons, the Run/Walk graph is not shown when Multisport is used. Probably a bug, since the data from Connect IQ fields are then usually missing too.

Edit: in fact it concerns only GC Web. The phone app does show the Run/Walk graph even at Multisport.

  • I know that graph, but I'm sure in my case it was a selection filter on top of the laps/repeats.

Also I checked the run/walk graph for my trainings and it does not match the intervals of the exercise.

I am a terrible runner, but I can power walk fast and that graph tends to assign my best walking intervals to the run category.

Well, then walk slower Wink The purpose of the run/walk method is to keep the HR in the low aerobic mode, improving so your aerobic capacity, while limiting the lactate and toxin accumulation in the muscles, greatly reducing so the recovery time, while improving your fitness and readiness for harder workouts. I would not bother whether the laps are labeled as walk or as run, it is absolutely unimportant. It is the HR that counts.

Pretty strange. Idk if this somehow indicates a half-baked feature that was withdrawn or only partially implemented.

At the very least, they could categorize walk intervals as "recovery" or "other" in the current system.
