Steps in Walk activity statistics

Hi.

I try to do a morning walk-activity every morning.

I know every step is counted, because I can follow them on my Fenix 7 - but as I press stop-activity they are "gone", and I cannot find them in the Garmin Connect App or Web.

Does someone know if it is possible to get steps shown in the Garmin Connect statistics, and why are Garmin not willing to put that info in the app?
I have seen posts that are over 7 years about this issue, and not yet "solved".

I would say that steps are very directly involved in an activity called "WALK"!

I have the data field "Steps" on my watch, and I can see/calculate the steps from the summary screen - but I can NOT see the steps in the activity - I can find speed, awg. steps, cadence and so on, but NOT the actual steps.

Btw. I can see the total steps for that specific activity in Strava (so the data is recorded and stored by Garmin Connect) - but not in "Strava Splits".

Come on Garmin, RELEASE MY DATA, or explain why not.

  • Not sure I understand, but if you just miss the information about the steps during an activity, and want to have them then shown in Garmin Connect, you can add the data to the activity with a simple free Data Field Connect IQ app. There are a number of them in the webstore at Connect IQ Store | Search Activity Steps | Garmin (including my own app)

Or are you telling the app does not show any steps at all in the daily or weekly overview? In that case there is something broken with your setup. I recommend to Remove and Add a Device From the Garmin Connect App | Garmin Customer Support, then log a few minutes of steps and HR, and record a test activity, wait till the next morning, sync, and see whether it helped. If not, then have a look at the Troubleshooting guide for (some) data missing after syncing for more tips.

  • I think you need the "Steps to Fit" IQ data field. Once you've downloaded it to your Fenix, then you need to add it to one of the pages for your activity. When you save your your activity, it will appear in Mobile and Web Connect.

I also personally use the "Simple steps" data field which allows me to see my total steps for the day during the activity, Again the field needs to be added to a page of the activity.

  • Hi,

Thanx for answer, and sorry for my danelish.

I have the Garmin data field "steps" from the group "other" in one of my Walk-screens, and would think that having that data field recorded I would be able to see the data in the App/Web - but no.

I have now downloaded and installed your txActivitySteps in a new Walk-screen.

I am very keen to see how my data will be presented tomorrow.

Thank you very much for your time.

I could not find the data field in the App (Android) but I found it in the watch, and made the new screen here.
After that I could also see it in the App. I had made the sync. - but ?
Now it's in there, and I'm very keen to see how my data will be presented tomorrow.

Thank you very much for your time.

You can test it quickly, without doing a true walk or run. Just start a dummy activity, do a few steps (must be at least 10-20 before the counter starts incrementing), save, sync, and check the results in GC. You can do it at home, no need to wait for the GPS lock. Easier to see in GC Web than on the app, but it works with both of them.

  • Ok, but I'm eager waiting;-)

    Have a very nice day.

  • In case anyone’s curious, Garmin *does* store the total number of steps for an activity in the saved FIT file, for both walking and running, and this value does *not* correspond to activity time in minutes * average cadence, which is how runalyze seems to estimate it.

If you open a FIT file in https://www.fitfileviewer.com and click on the session message, there’s a field called “total_cycles”. This is the number of steps / 2 (as it’s expressed in “rotations per minute”, not steps per minute) - if you multiply this number by 2, you will get the steps value that’s displayed in Strava.

Strava only shows total steps for walking, not running, but if you change a run activity’s type to walk, then it will show the number of steps from the FIT file (as described above.)

  • Yes, in fact the number of steps is even available directly in GC Web without 3rd parties. You just need to open the JSON data response with activity details in browser's DevTools, and the number of steps is there. Using the simple CIQ app is still probably a bit more comfortable. Besides others, it also shows the number of steps in individual laps, which was also required in the OP.

  • Thanks! I wasn't suggesting it as a solution or anything, just confirming that the activity step count is in fact saved to the FIT file (and that it's not a simple calculation derived from average cadence), bc OP mentioned the data is in there, and it's actually something I wondered about for a while. To your point, I don't think step counts are recorded for laps.

  • Hi, and thanx for your time and info/answers.

I have installed txAtivitySteps and Steps for FIT - and walked the walk.

That generated a new section in the GC Web, with STEPS and diff. info - thanx for that :-)

txActivitySteps Distance and Garmin Distance do not agree on the distance I walked - is where a reason for that?

I would say that Garmin is correct, as I have measured the distance in Google Maps and on a bike.

Btw. I have done the route with a Withings Nova, that measured the 5,4km distance.

So, am I happy with the new steps "function" - YES...

BUT, I still think that it is a basic Garmin function, that Garmin, for some reason, will not provide (please tell why) - WALK and STEPS are very connected.

Thanx for your time and for the STEPS...
