i am having an issue trimming the time if an activity

I have done a swim and need to trim the time since was unable to stop timings once finished - I can change the distance of the pool but not the time of the swim

Change the activity type to Run, edit the time or trim the activity, then change it back to Swim. No worry, no data will be lost. The original activity can be restored at any moment, anyway.
