Forum Helper browser extension

Originally just for myself (and for another fellow user), I wrote an extension for Chromium browsers, helping me to cope with some annoyances and bugs of the forum, as well as for inserting predefined reply templates, for easy jumping to favorite subforums, for identifying anonymous users by custom tags, and for detecting spam. It also notifies me when a new post contains a keyword of my choice. Over the time its complexity grew, and I told myself that perhaps some other regular users of the forums could appreciate it too. So if you are interested, have a look at it in Chrome's webstore. It is free, it does not collect any user data, and it does not show any advertisement.

There is also a detailed description at https://gfh.truxoft.com/, including a Changelog, and a ToDo list. Below, there is a screenshot showing how it looks in the browser. Besides Chrome, it should work in Edge, Opera, and in other modern Chromium browsers.

If you have any questions, or comments, do not hesitate to ask here.

  • No, I mean links like this: could be also detected

OK, I see. Yes, that could be done. I'll put it on the Wish-List, but cannot promise any quick implementation. Currently I am working on another project, taking a lot of resources, and am not sure when I'll manage to do some work on the GFH extension again.

  • i need to try that !

But need to move to Chrome, because i'm a Firefox user since 0.8 Nerd

  • Well, I did not test it, but Google claims that many Chrome extensions work on Firefox too. Otherwise, the GFH extension was tested on Edge and Opera too, and should work on other Chromium based browsers as well.

  • ... I found some instructions for installing Chrome extensions on Firefox here below. Did not try it (yet) though, so no idea whether it really works with GFH too:

  • ... so I tested the import of extensions from Chrome, but it only works for extensions already approved by addons.mozilla.org (AMO), which in my case were only some of the well established extensions like uBlock Origin and similar. I am afraid that my extension with ~16 users does not have much chance to be reviewed by AMO.

I also tried sideloading the extension to Firefox from a zip file, but that did not work either.

  • Thanks, i'm using PortableApps, so i can dedicate a browser to "Garmin"

    :-)

P.S. : my mother family is from Saint Etienne !

  • I just tried having the extension approved at AMO, and got three incompatibility warnings. Two of them should not be difficult to fix (at least I hope), but I am not sure about the third one. Will try to investigate the possibilities later.

  • i'm discovering your work, only that is enough to justify the use of it !

Overlapping / formatting / eternal links / Abuse ... Clap

  • Since yesterday there was a huge number of spam posts, most of them on the Connect IQ forums. If you use the spam detection in GFH, depending on your options, and depending how often you keep the browser running, the red spam counter may be showing hundreds or even thousands of detected spam. There were well over 3000 spam messages, but your extension might not have caught all of them, unless you use rather aggressive settings, and maintain the spam filters.

However, although the spam still continues coming in, it is currently happening in a slower rate, and most of the spam was already deleted by Garmin admin. Over time, the red spam counter will remove automatically the purged messages, but if it does not happen within 24 hours, open a separate browser window with the forum (not just a separate tab!), and click on the GFH extension icon in order to open the GFH popup window with settings. When the windows is open, the extension scans all detected threads with spam, and verifies whether the spam posts still exist, or were already removed.

Since there are up to thousands of posts, the process may be quite long - perhaps even 20 or 30 minutes. That's why I recommended opening the GFH popup on a separate window, which allows you to continue work with another instance of the browser. Additionally, in order to be removed from the counter (and from the list of detected spam), the post has to be detected missing minimally 3 times (avoiding so accidental removals, i.e.  due to connectivity problems). For this reason, you may need to repeat the opening of the GFH popup three times, and letting it work for some 20-30 minutes each time. If you close it prematurely, the status of the verification may stay unsaved, hence gets lost.
