the map and activity data is not showing on some of my activities and the page then hangs (iMac Pro with latest updates on safari and Chrome) yet my connect app on phone works fine - annoyed with Garmin now.

Try changing the maps provider from Google Maps, to Openstreetmaps, or to HERE, if you can see at least the options there. Also try an alternative Internet connection. Try force-reloading the page (Ctrl-F5). Try a different browser.
