How do you create a power-based run workout in Garmin

The main reason I bought my current Garmin watch was to allow me to run using power-based workouts (using a Stryd pod, the best for the purpose). Now the option to set power targets in explicably missing both on Garmin Connect Web and Garmin Connect Mobile.

This makes no sense at all, unless Garmin's strategy is to make 100% sure my next sports watch will not be a Garmin.

Why has Garmin crippled the functionality for no good reason? Is there a workaround that is not obvious via the workout creation interface? If not, when are you going to fix this glaring deficiency?

  • I just checked, and I can create both power zone and power range targets for running workouts. Tried Connect Web since my phone is not currently with me.

  • That is surprising. I can verify the option does not appear when I use Connect Web (despite my run activities having power graphs). Here is a snapshot of the options I get.  Is there an option you have used that enables it?

I think it’s a moot point, since Garmin’s built-in running power features don’t work with Stryd or any other 3rd-party running power meter. When you select “use accessory” for the power source, the watch will use power only from a *Garmin* accessory like the RD-POD or HRM-RUN.

If you want to use Garmin power features, you either have to use power from the wrist or power from a Garmin accessory.

Yes, you can manually pair Stryd as a “power meter”, but that only works for built-in cycling power.

You can verify what I’m saying by adding the built-in running power field to a running activity data screen and pairing your Stryd as a power meter, as well as adding the Stryd Zones data field. Set the activity power source to “use accessory” and don’t use an RD-POD or chest strap.

You’ll see that even though Stryd Zones displays power, the native running power field will remain blank.

EDIT: I see that Stryd Zones supports native power-based workouts now, from the link that schmjoe posted. So I guess what I said is only half true. Seems that you could probably create a native power-based workout, but you’d have to use Stryd Zones to actually execute the workout. If you can’t create a native power-based workout, hopefully you’ll be able to create workouts on your stryd account and have them synced to your Garmin account, with the power targets intact.

EDIT2: Also, when I create a running workout in the Connect app or website, my intensity target type options include power zones and custom power (range). Not sure why you’re not seeing power target options. I have a Forerunner 955, what watch do you have?

  • I forgot to add in my message that I'm using a HRM Pro+, not Sryd for my rubbing power. So what others have already wrote explains my case.

  • @FlowState, that is incorrect. I have existing power-based running workouts and, for example, today had audio alerts when my running power went above and below the target range. The problem is that I can not create a new workout with such targets.

I am using a Forerunner 245 Music which I got at the start of last year.  Stryd Zones provides the ability to use Stryd for power (as above).

  • @Bitti, while that is interesting, when you create a workout there is no dependence on the source of the power data.
Note that Garmin Connect explicitly acknowledges that it is aware of the Stryd sensor. Here is a clip from Garmin Connect Web:

  • TL;DR 245 Music doesn’t even support native running power, which probably explains why power-based workouts are unavailable to you in Connect.

I can’t explain why it seemed to work before, unless there was a bug.

Fortunately you should still be able to use workouts created in the Stryd app with Stryd Zones, afaik. You just won’t be able to create power-based workouts in Connect.

That’s interesting, given that Forerunner 245 Music doesn’t have support for native running power. I genuinely can’t explain that, unless they had the feature in there by accident. Even if that was the case, you would’ve been getting alerts for native power (either from the wrist or a garmin accessory), not stryd.

Stryd Zones provides the ability to use Stryd for power (as above).

Yes it does, but it does not allow native features to use Stryd Power as far as I know (based on my knowledge of CIQ, as a CIQ dev, it would be impossible for a CIQ app to allow native running power features to use 3rd party power, unless they already had that ability.). That’s why the link above states you must use Stryd Zones to follow a power based workout. All the handling of stryd power is done in the stryd zones app itself.

Furthermore, according to this Garmin support article, native running power isn’t even supported by 245 Music, which might explain why you are unable to create a power-based workout for runs. 245 Music doesn’t even support the old Garmin CIQ Running Power app.

You’ll note that when you edit your running activity’s data fields, there should be no option for “power”. In your running activity’s settings, there should be no setting for “Running Power.” I have both of those things in my 955.

when you create a workout there is no dependence on the source of the power data.

That’s what you think. While the Stryd Zones data field may be able to look at native workouts and use them with Stryd power, native workout features won’t be able to use power from Stryd, by design.

I have a 955 which supports native running power, and I am 100% sure that none of the native power features work with Stryd as a power source. That’s why stryd keeps telling ppl they have to use one of their CIQ apps.

Note that Garmin Connect explicitly acknowledges that it is aware of the Stryd sensor.

That doesn’t mean anything, It just means that you paired your stryd natively, either as a foot pod or a (cycling) power meter. Except it’s a 245 Music, so there shouldn’t be any power meter support, so you must’ve paired it as a foot pod (which makes sense, given the shoe icon in your screenshot).

  • If you don’t believe me, find a friend who has one of the watches in the support article (like 255, 265, 955 or 965) and ask to look at their Connect app. I guarantee they will be able to create power-based workouts.

  • It is kind of ridiculous that you write so many words to argue that the Garmin Forerunner 245 Music - a watch I bought for the explicit purpose of using with my Stryd, because I knew it could (and with the bonus of music support, which is great!) - SHOULDN'T be doing what it does perfectly well with existing power based workouts using the best running power pod available, which PROVES that it could do the same job with a similar workout created today.

What is your motivation for obfuscating the simple reality?
