Can no longer export courses to watch

Hi. My Garmin 920 XT has always worked fine.

However, seemingly after this beta update I am no longer able to export courses from garmin connect into my watch, despite all my best efforts, whether via the web, garmin express or the android garmin app ("send to device").

The apps sync, but the new courses just will not show up, and only courses I had uploaded previously are available on the watch, although the new ones are visible on the app and online.

  • Is there a chance you've reached the course file limit? How many courses are on the watch? IIRC, the undocumented limit was around 50. With your watch connected to a computer, check the \GARMIN\Courses folder on your watch.

  • hey. no. not many courses. i even deleted some off the watch to see if the others would sync but didn't work

  • What is the source of these courses? Did you create from Garmin Connect or from a 3rd party source? Can you attach the course file here so we can see if any protentional issues?

    Just for kicks, I brought my own 920XT out of retirement to test. Created a course in Garmin Connect and sent it to the watch without any issues.

  • So my process has generally been to create a gpx file externally via maps to gpx, I then import the gpx file into the Garmin app and save it as a course.

    I should mention that I have used this process to import all the courses I have ever created and imported onto the watch previously but it seemed after I opted into the beta program is when I suspect that the course export stopped working (although I can't say for sure that it happened after beta)!

    NOTE - The courses show fine in the app and on Garmin connect, but just export to the watch

    NOTE 2 - how do I attach the gpx file here for you to view?

  • Can you attach one of those files here? Meanwhile, I'll try Maps to GPX, to see what happens.

  • Sure - how can I attach the file? It seems to only allow images?

    Maps to gpx may not work since the recent changes Google have made to their maps offering although I'm not sure.

    But I can certainly attach the gpx file if I know how

    • Zip the file, then in a reply post Insert >> Image/video/file >> click Upload >> browse for file >> OK.
    • Or upload the fit file to a reputable file sharing service, such as OneDriveGoogle DriveDropbox, make the file public, then paste a link to the file in your post.
    • Or if you'd rather your activity remained private, you can send me a private message. I've set my account to allow PMs from everyone.
  • That worked for me.

    • Imported into Garmin Connect Web courses https://connect.garmin.com/modern/courses
    • Saved the course.
    • Opened the Garmin Connect Android app, opened the course, then sent to device Forerunner 920XT.
    • After a few minutes watch displayed "Transfer Complete."
    • On the watch, menu, navigation, courses.

    Taking it a step further, I'd just delete the entire \GARMIN\COURSES folder from the watch. The folder will regenerate after removing the watch from your computer. While your at it, also delete the contents of the \GARMIN\ACTIVITY folder.

    Try importing then sending to the watch again, then if still no joy consider a factory reset of the watch.

    • Power off device by holding the power button for 30 seconds until the screen goes black.
    • After device is fully powered off, hold 2 right buttons simultaneously.
    • Press and release power for 1 second
    • Wait for 1st beep, then release top button.
    • Wait for 2nd beep, then release bottom button.
    • If successful, you will be prompted for language.
    • Follow the remaining on-screen prompts for initial setup.
  • Ok. I will try these steps and see if I have any luck. It was working fine then suddenly stopped so hopefully one of these steps will sort it out. I'll update once I've tried! Cheers
