How can I see my step count for the past 5 years?

I am interested in comparing all of the years since I have had my Garmin to see how job changes, lifestyle changes, WFH etc have affected my yearly step count.

I've had my Garmin since May 2018 (FR235).

Is there a way for me to do this?

It is extremely useful data to me as it will inform future decisions about lifestyle, work, etc.

Strava helps me to do the same thing for running activities (yearly summary of km) and this has been really useful to chart my progress in running, but it doesn't cover steps which I think are a better indicator of overall activity.

  • You can browse through all your Steps history for example here: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/report/29/wellness/last_year

The totals are for the floating year (last 12 months), though. Not for the calendar years.

  • When I try to do this it stops at the one year mark.  Like the OP, I would very much like to see monthly step totals for all of my historical data but have not been able to do this on either Garmin connect or the web page.

  • TL;DR you can see previous years by using the navigation buttons next to the date range on either the website or the app.

Everything works fine, except that the yearly/monthly totals/averages for the current year may be skewed since the the current year includes the current month, and the current month may not have a full month’s worth of data. (This can be worked around by temporarily changing the date on your computer.)

The totals are for the floating year (last 12 months), though.

To be clear it’s the last 12 calendar months (including the current month), which means that for the current year, you only get full data for 11 months unless it’s currently the last day of the month.

For example, I see totals for each of the months between July 2023 to June 2024, but we’re only at June 12, so obviously June 2024 doesn’t represent a full month’s worth of data, which means you can’t really do an apples-to-apples comparison between the yearly total or monthly average for this year compared to all other years. Pretty on brand for Garmin to not consider / care about this discrepancy. Of course if they had chosen to show us calendar years, then the totals/averages would be even further skewed.

I also see a bug in the app (not the website) where the average weekly steps is labelled as “Avg Monthly”.

When I try to do this it stops at the one year mark.  Like the OP, I would very much like to see monthly step totals for all of my historical data but have not been able to do this on either Garmin connect or the web page.

Not sure exactly what you’re looking for, but both the Connect website (at trux’s link) and the Connect app can show monthly step totals if you select 1 year / monthly totals, and you’re able to view previous years by using the navigation buttons. The view shows the following aggregate values: total steps, total distance, average daily steps, and average monthly steps.

Again, the data is not displayed for 1 calendar year, but it’s displayed for 12 calendar months (including the current month). In most cases (when it’s not the final day of the current month), this will skew aggregate values for the current year such as total (yearly) steps and average monthly steps so they can’t be fairly compared to values from previous years (which will refer to a full 12 months). This can actually be worked around by temporarily changing the date on your computer to December 31 (or if you prefer, the last day of the current month) (IIRC this doesn’t work on mobile, as the app just stops working if the date is incorrect.)

So you can compare monthly totals year over year - you just can’t see multiple years at once, if that’s what you were looking for.
