"Export Original" returns a GPX rather than a FIT

I recorded a two day car drive as two "Activities" on my Garmin Epix Pro 2. The "Export Original" for the first day downloads as a FIT, as expected.  However the second day downloads as a GPX. Any ideas why the difference?

I know I didn't upload a GPX from some other source because the GPX contains heart rate data and only my Garmin Epix can record that.  My first thought was the length, in time or distance, but the 2nd day was shorter in both than the 1st day.  Another possibility is that I used two different Activities to record the drive on the two days. Does anyone know if "Track Me" or some other Activity records as GPX rather than FIT?

I tested it with my Instinct 2, and the Track Me activity exports as a FIT file. I cannot guarantee it works in the same way with Epix 2, but there is nothing simpler than just starting a few seconds long Track Me activity on your watch, saving, syncing, and then exporting - it will show you which format Epix 2 uses.

You can also look directly on the storage of the watch, into the folder //GARMIN/Activity - the original files stay there till you delete them, so your second day should be there too. I never saw other files than FIT in that folder on my watches.

  • Thanks.  Didn't know about the activities still being on the watch so I'll look and see if it was recorded as a GPX.  I didn't think to look in the GPX because I might tell me what activity I used to record it.
