Vigorous activity minutes and calories don't correspond to heart rate from HRM pro!

Hi,

I was a little surprised to notice today after a very intense hike that garmin had only counted 48mn of vigorous activity, while I hiked for 2 hours with an absolute minimum of 130bpm, max 166, and I would guess average of at least 140.

Same with calories... 94 active only??!

I am 34 years old so this should be considered vigorous.

My watch (fenix5) just died and i am in the process of getting a replacement so I am using my HRM pro only.

Heart rate uploads well (see pics below).

I suspect the app is basing the calculation on steps and cadence alone? Why not using the hrm data? If i am at slow cadence but 140bpm i'm obviously going uphill?

What did I miss?

Also i tried adding exercise manually (hike) but makes no difference.

Is there any way to START an activity on garmin connect so the HRM pro can give data to this activity?

Thanks!

J.

  • What did I miss?

Probably the reading of the description how IMs work. Most notably the texts about Resting HR and about the 10 continuous minutes.

How Are Intensity Minutes Earned? | Garmin Customer Support

Your Resting HR is very high - 74 bpm (because you do not wear the watch or the strap during rest and during sleep). Because of it, the IM thresholds are proportionally high too. And HRM-Pro requires 10 continuous minutes of high HR. Whenever it drops lower before the 10 minutes are reached, all the period is discarded.

No, you need a device for that.

  • Thanks.

I actually read the description about how active minutes work and how they are based on RHR before i commented here... And what you say was my first thought.

But there was no mention of any formula used to calculate the threshold... So i found somewhere else that moderate was 150% RHR (=111bpm based on a 74bpm RHR) and vigorous 200% (150bpm)

I still ONLY have 78mn in active zones while i hiked for 2 hours above 130bpm... Doesn't add up, should be at least 120mn! Any chance you have the exact zones formula to calculate moderate and vigorous from RHR?

Anyway, either that source was wrong, or i was right and it was calculated based on steps instead of HR (from the same article you quoted, active minutes will also be calculated based on steps and cadence in the absence of HR, which would be the case if the app disregarded the HRM pro data because i don't have a watch at the moment...)

I'm just trying to figure out if Garmin made it so that I can only have basic stuff without the watch (or a bug) or if there is anything i can do to get more accurate data. I live at the world's end, it will take a while before i get the replacement watch!

    Thanks again for your help

  • The ~150% and ~200% or RHR come from my own empirical tests, and they may differ from device to device, and also from user to user, because I suspect that not only the Resting HR, but also the Max HR may play a role. Using the HR Reserve (Max HR - Resting HR) would indeed make sense, but to confirm or exclude that possibility a longer series of tests would have to be done.

In your case I would first open the all-day HR graph on Garmin Connect Web, and would zoom on the section of interest. There may be short drops of HR below the threshold. If the interval with increased HR is shorter than 10 minutes, it won't be counted at all.

The problem, though, with the all-day HR graph is, that it only shows averages over 2 minutes (unlike HR graphs in activities). So it is very well possible (and in fact very probable), that in real-time, the HR dropped for a few seconds even much lower than the 2 minutes averages on the all-day graph show. And even a single second below the threshold will reset the minutes counter, and re-apply the 10 continuous minutes requirement.

f there is anything i can do to get more accurate dat

The only thing I can recommend is buying or borrowing another device. In most stores with sport goods you can find old Garmin models for a few bucks, and those may be fully sufficient for the basic metrics.

Thanks. Unfortunately once again I live in Fiji, not even on the main Island. There is very few sports shops here, and they mostly sell overpriced chinese crap. No chance of finding even an old garmin watch until i get a good replacement!

Thanks for your advice. At this point i guess i'll just have to make my own data in my head until i get something better.

I still use my old fitbit in the meantime, but data is always off... *** am i glad I upgraded to garmin! Fitbit simply won't record any sudden intense activity (like climbing a hill, HR drops to 80!). Garmin is so much superior... Can't wait to get my replacement!
