Garmin Connect Training Load All Wrong Now

Since mid-late December 2023, none of the FIT files I've been importing from FulGaz into Connect have added any training load to the stats I've been keeping and monitoring for the last 13 years.

This means that all the data my latest fēnix uses to monitor and calculate my health is effectively wrong and the suggestions it makes therefore useless.

Whilst I use the fēnix for walking and outdoor cycling - and running on the treadmill, even if the recorded runs are incorrect - my daily indoor cycling results measured using a Schwinn and FulGaz on an iPad are not being recorded correctly by Garmin Connect when the same, detailed FIT files are manually imported.

This looks like a change by Garmin and not FulGaz, so the question is therefore why?

If you're not going to actually use the imported data than it's a waste of my time to import it into Connect and hence Connect itself is rendered useless to me.

Maybe it's time to abandon Garmin gear altogether and rely instead on my Apple Watch Ultra 2 and another software platform that does give me accurate data. Otherwise what's the point if Garmin are telling me something that's demonstrably wrong?

"Your lighter training load is allowing your body to recover, which is essential during extended periods of hard training. You can return to a higher training load when you feel ready."
Compare that rubbish with the stats for last week:
Distance:134.29 km Time:7:14:42 Calories:6,400
  • I should add that I monitor my sleep with the fēnix and measure weight with Garmin scales, so I've invested a lot over the years with Garmin, only for them to decide that they don't want to give me accurate data/feedback any longer.

  • Activities from certified apps contribute to the Training Status. Currently Tacx Training app (actually Garmin's own), Zwift, TrainerRoad, and Rouvy are approved (see What Is the Training Status Feature on My Garmin Device? | Garmin Customer Support). FulGaz is currently not listed - they may need to contact Garmin and have their app checked for compatibility and certified.

Besides using one of the compatible apps, you can also log the ride on your Garmin device. If you connect the sensors of your Schwinn to it, as well as the chest strap, then that's all Garmin needs for calculating the metrics. Virtual data about elevation or the map are not needed - it means you do not need to import the activity from FulGaz at all, all metrics will be calculated by your Garmin device.

In similar way, you can also use the Tacx Training app for recording the ride - you can connect the Schwinn sensors and the HRM strap to app on the phone, tablet, or computer, and do your training on it (works even without using any Garmin device, in this case).

  • Yes, but that's all a recent change. So far I've not found a way to connect the Schwinn (it's an 800IC/IC8) to the fēnix 7S and the fēnix measures my heart rate for me anyway. But I also want to log the power, distance and speed from the Schwinn and ideally the distance from FulGaz (and hence elevation) to keep track overall.

All of this I could do ... until Garmin decided to change things in December.

For that you have to connect the sensors of the bike to the watch (or to Tacx). On the watch, have a look in the menu Sensors & Accessories, whether you can see them (you may need to turn the pedals for a while to activate the sensors).

  • Just checked the Tacx app details: "250+ videos" and you have to pay extra to get HD videos. FulGaz has ten times that many, so far more choice.

  • You can use the free version to record the ride passively, while you use FulGaz for the video and the trainer control
