No Training Effect from FulGaz FIT Files

For the last month or so, Garmin Connect does not show any training effect for the rides I am doing on FulGaz.

I import the FIT file in the usual way - because of a lack of integration between Connect and FulGaz in the first place - and whereas before Connect was showing me the training effect, etc. that section is now missing.

What has changed?

  • You need a Garmin device. Not sure how it ever worked...

Why Is My Training Status Not Updating on My Garmin Device? | Garmin Customer Support

Only activities uploaded from the Tacx Training app, Zwift, ROUVY, or TrainerRoad will count towards Training Status when you are recording an activity without a Garmin device.

  • No, that's the list of apps that Garmin allows to link to Connect.

This is an actual manually imported FIT file and this was working fine until recently.

  • Try trimming the activity (i.e removing the last second) in Garmin Connect, and see whether the TE reappears.

  • Another test that would be interesting, is as follows:

    1. Back up an old imported activity where you still see the TE (export as Original in Garmin Connect Web)
    2. Delete the activity in GC
    3. Reimport the unzipped FIT file again

Then check whether the reimported file shows the TE or not. If it does, then something recently changed in the files from FulGaz, and you will have to speak to them. If it does not, then it means that Garmin disabled the feature on imported files (minimally for 3rd party apps not having the certification of compatibility). In such case, you can't do much apart of simultaneously recording your activity on a Garmin device.

  • Interesting!

I exported an activity from GCW as an original file and while waiting for the FulGaz FIT file to be emailed to me, I uploaded the GCW export and lo and behold no training effect details now!

So Garmin have arbitrarily crippled this feature for no good reason.

I can't record on my fēnix 7S because that doesn't link to my Schwinn 800IC (whereas it does connect from the Schwinn to FulGaz on my iPad).

I would not tell "for no good reason", when we do not know why they removed it. It could be to avoid skewing all the other metrics recorded with Garmin devices, by data not warranting the compatibility of all values.

More specifically, the algorithm for TE needs not only the HR, but also the HRV, the respiratory rate, and some other data that is unlikely to be included in your imported activity (white paper explaining the details). For me it is more surprising it ever worked, since it actually should not. From this point of view, the removing of the TE processing of imported activities based solely on some limited subset of data, makes a good sense to me.

You do not need to link anything to the watch. All the watch needs for the TE, is recording an activity and having the HRM enabled (if you use a strap, then connect it to the watch too).

  • Well firstly Garmin have changed it recently; in which case this means that all the other metrics they have recorded for me since about 2010 will be wrong (and that's many days every week for all those years)!

Secondly if I record the data twice, all that Garmin will record is my heart rate and time and I would have to manually input all the other data - although I would only be able to input averages - for rpm, power, speed, distance, elevation changes, etc. So why would I do that?

It's Garmin's decision to change something that was either working just fine or else was wrong from the start!

    Yes, that is possible

Because you want to know the training effect? You do not need to enter any data there, use it just for the Training Effect - you will have all of the other data in the imported activity, so duplicating it would be counterproductive.

Sorry, I am just trying to help you find a solution that would work for you. I cannot influence Garmin's decisions. You can contact them directly at https://suppport.garmin.com and express your dissatisfaction there.

And BTW, I am not familiar with Schwinn bikes, and cannot test it, but a quick Google search reveals that connecting Schwinn to a Garmin watch or computer should be possible. And you could possibly also connect your Schwinn sensors directly to the Tacx app (either on a phone, tablet, or on a computer), and use Garmin's native Tacx for the training - that would allow the full metrics too (not only the Training Effect).

YouTube offers also several tutorials - for example this one (not sure whether it applies to your bike too, but I am sure you can find the right instructions better, if it does not):
