I am considering returning to a country where I had hiked in 2016. I wanted to review maps of those hikes, and went back to 2016 in Garmin Connect, only to find that the one I wanted is gone, even though others from the same week are still there. I recorded activities every day from 2-23 September 2016, but there are blanks on the following dates: September 3-9, 11-13, 16-20, and 22. I have screen shots of the activities, but of course the map is not helpful. And in principle, it's very upsetting that the data is gone. I don't know what else might have been deleted, but the history was a reason to stick with Garmin. If that's as unreliable as their devices (I've had two bad Forerunners in the past 16 months), then there is no reason left to buy another Garmin.
