What has happened to GPS distance recording using Fenix 5S in Golf app

For years the Golf app has been tracking me via GPS when I play a round using a Fenix 5S.  Over the last few weeks this has disappeared and now at the end of a round it tells me I have walked 0km which of course (sic) is rubbish.  This also means that I cannot track my shots by exporting my GPS path into Google maps.  I do this because the attempt by the Golf app to track my shots is puerile.

Is this a setting I have changed or has there been an update to the Golf app which has removed this functionality from my watch?

  • Here is some more information from my watch which is running v2.16.0.7 of the Golf app and v25 of GarminOS.

This is the Golf app fit file after today's round - note distance is always zero and there is no lat/long data

This is the Golf app file file from my round on 4-Dec-2023 - note it has lat/long data and distances are recorded.

  • If the odometer feature showing the distance/time at the end of the round is showing 0 for the distance, then the following factors should be considered:

    • The watch did not have a good satellite acquisition throughout the round. This factor should typically be obvious during the round, as distances provided to the front, back, middle of the green would not be updating or displaying correctly.
    • Storage related factors related to the total storage on the watch becoming too full, or the allocated storage for the activity file needs cleared, or has a problem file stored within it needing to be removed. This can be resolved by clearing the copies of Activity files through the History section of the main menu on your fenix 5S > Select Options > Delete All Activities.
    • The course map you are playing that was downloaded from the Garmin Connect mobile app is needing deleted and re-downloaded in the Connect app > Then sync the watch after re-downloading to see if that also helps to correct the issue.
    • Make sure your device satellite data is showing current in the About section of the System settings directly on your watch. Hold MENU > Select Settings > System > About > Scroll down the about menu and until you see the EPO section and ensure the menu is showing "Current" and not "Expired" or "Missing".

I would recommend connecting your watch to a home computer and check the total available storage remaining on the device drive vs the used amount of storage showing currently.

Access the GARMIN folder within the device drive and manually remove any .FIT files showing in the SCORE/SCORECARD folder, and within the ACTIVITY folder. (Ensure any recently recorded activities/scorecards have been synced to your Garmin Connect account prior to deleting any .FIT files from within the ACTIVITY or SCORECARD folders.

During the round, you can access the round menu where the odometer section can be viewed. The odometer menu has an option to reset or view the distance total while you are actively recording the round. Reference this menu to ensure the watch is recording data throughout the next round.

After removing any activity files, reboot the watch by powering it off and back on to then see if the odometer feature is then recording distance at the end of the round.

  • Thanks for your response as it confirmed what I suspected and had already taken action to rectify (clearing out some of the scorecard .FIT files).  See my responses to your suggestions indicated by the '<' character

            < It does show Current

        < df command shows:
        < /dev/disk3 110,988 (512-blks) 10988 (blks used) 10% (capacity)    112 (iused) 0 (ifree) 100 (%iused)
< there is plenty of free disk space
< I don't know if I should be concerned with the inode counts as they look very low but that depends on how files & folders are allocated by the OS

Access the GARMIN folder within the device drive and manually remove any .FIT files showing:
in the SCORE/SCORECARD folder (actually ./SCORCRDS folder) ,
< deleted 60 out of 93 files - this seemed to be the issue as it now works
        and within the ACTIVITY folder.
< cleaned up this folder by removing some of the older files - but I do this regularly anyway
(Ensure any recently recorded activities/scorecards have been synced to your Garmin Connect account prior to deleting any .FIT files from within the ACTIVITY or SCORECARD folders.
