Insights in Garmin Connect, BTT vs Road speed

Good afternoon.

Does the Garmin Connect Insights tab, where you can see where you rank on average speed by age group and gender, take into account the difference between mountain biking and road biking?

Because on mountain biking you will always go slower than on the road, so if you often use the mountain bike, your relative position may be lower than that of other people who only use the road.

Thank you so much, ..Eduardo

  • Another reason I have always had Insights off. The "playing field" is not level so why bother?

  • The "playing field" is not level so why bother?

Because you can see how you do against the average, and especially how your situation evolves over time.

  • And as the original poster described - the average is skewed because of the type of activity being performed. Might be worthwhile if the activity was the same, but the way it stands - no.

  • the average is skewed because

An average is always skewed by principle, because it is simply an average. Even if it were just for MTB, it would be still skewed, because it would be just an average of people riding just down hill, those using mostly road on their MTB, those riding in fields in deep mud, etc. It would tell nothing about the conditions at individual rides, about the terrains, tire pressure, wind, grade, etc.

The average over tens of millions of users is simply a good etalon that you can compare your own averages with. You can observe whether you are getting better over time, or not. It is just for the fun, and for some additional stimulation, it is not intended to be exact scientific analysis of your performances.

If you want a more serious Insight into your cycling performance in comparison to others, select rather the Cycling Power Insight in the dropdown menu. However, you need a powermeter for that.

  • Thanks you everybody for your answers.

In Insights there are other more relevant and objective indicators, such as power or average weekly duration, Maybe it is better to pay attention to that to be able to compare yourself with the rest of the users.

  • Comparing MTB v MTB would be way more insightful. I’m guessing that eBiking is probably lumped in as well. I only MTB… so would prefer to see my stats stacked against MTB. I’m not a roadie averaging 30+km’s/ hour so seeing my stats vs all cycling is useless.

  • No it doesn’t seem to which makes the “insight” useless. We are comparing our results to roadies, ebikers, gravel etc… so the “insights” are a load of Poop
