Post-run zones don't match and won't update

Long story short, I recently changed my Forerunner 255 to use my established LTHR (I use a chest strap), and I set up my zones according to Training Peaks guidelines. The screenshots are from the connect IQ app, but I have confirmed a number of times they're there on my watch as well (first two pics)

I did a long run yesterday and as you can see in pic 3, it shows I spent an entire hour in zone 4? Unless I'm totally misunderstanding how these numbers work (possible), all the zone HR ranges are completely incorrect.

I've also set my daily suggested workouts to use zone based instead of pace based, and it's recommending I run at 148bpm for a base run - I was under the impression that base runs were Z2, which would be 152-161bpm for me?

I'm positive I haven't missed a step here or anything and that something is buggy. I'd like to use the zones I've set and not have my Garmin constantly nag me. Has anyone had this before and fixed it?

  • I did a long run yesterday and as you can see in pic 3, it shows I spent an entire hour in zone 4?

You did not post the HR graph from that activity, so we can neither confirm, nor exclude that you've spent almost the entire time in the Z4

  • My HR was an average of 167bpm, but my question was more that the Z4 range shown in the app is listed as 158-177bpm, which is much wider than the range I have set, so have I set something incorrectly based on my settings?

I am trying to set my Z4 to be the range of 95% to 100% of my LTHR of 179, which should be 170-179.

  • The percentages do not match with the absolute values, so I see several possibilities: either you have edited the wrong table (there is the general one, but there are also three separate HRZ tables for running, cycling, and swimming, which override the main table), or the LTHR changed in the meantime, or the table got somehow corrupted. I recommend resetting the table and starting from the scratch. After redesigning your HRZ table, log a few seconds long dummy run activity (no need to actually run), and then check in Garmin Connect whether the HRZ values transferred all right.

  • Thank you!!! This was what did it.

I went into my user profile, heart rate & power zones, heart rate, sport heart rate, and then into running. I changed that setting to LTHR%, set my values, logged a quick run, and now everything looks correct in my app.
