Shimano Di2 Sensor Symbols on Connect Web and Mobile

Hi - I see this and the status updates but there seem to be some inconsistencies is what and when is reported / updated;

My Powermeter has BLE and Ant+ and I can get updates from either (but not both at the same time).

For the new Di2 (new Shimano 12sp) what are the two separate sensors? I can't tell from the icons and the top one in the list sometimes doesn't update, the bottom one does. One looks like a chainring maybe (or cassette?) and other... who knows? there's nothing in the Garmin documentation or Shimano.

  • Hi, it looks like you've changed how you connect to your power meter. In August it was ANT+, but since then it's been BLE. In the sensors list on your Garmin device you can control which is used by disabling the one you don't want (typically ANT+ is preferred for sensor connections).

    I don't know about the Di2, but the bottom symbol looks like front chainring, and the upper symbol looks like it could be the rear cassette. You could maybe experiment by pulling the battery from one of them (to simulate dead battery/device) and seeing which doesn't show up in the list.

  • On the Powermeter, yes that's right. I can choose one or the other. With the Di2 you cannot. You also can't disconnect front or back as there's only one battery and only one place the signal comes from (the rear - although the hood button also speak to the rear). Some rides I get both of the Di2 show up on the Garmin after the ride and sometimes only the one shown here. It's not down to me using (or not) the front derailleur or the hood buttons as I've tried different combinations.

    Mind you, not that it really matters but it gets me a bit OCD that something's not working right.

  • Ah ok, maybe that upper symbol refers to the button connection then. I dunno.

    In any case if your Di2 is working fine and your gear change data is recording ok, then you don't have to worry it's not working right.

    I sometimes see sensors "change identities" in things like this. I dunno if it's from firmware updates, me manually disconnecting/reconnecting things, or even battery changes.

    Even in the FIT files themselves I sometimes see variations in how devices are registered from one ride to the next. You can use something like Fit File Repair Tool to see how the devices are registered and what battery info they are reporting. But it won't change anything, mainly just for interest (unless examining for an actual malfunction).
