Sleep Streak badge vs Half Marathon badge

Dear Garmin Team,

I am writing to provide feedback on the badge point system, specifically in relation to the Sleep Streak and Half Marathon badges.

While I appreciate the effort to encourage healthy habits through badges, I've noticed a discrepancy in the point allocation. The Sleep Streak badge, being repeatable, grants 16 points per month to those achieving it consistently. Unfortunately, due to my personal circumstances, achieving a high Sleep Streak score is impossible for me.

On the other hand, the Half Marathon badge, which is a significant achievement in itself, does not offer any points after the initial badge.

I believe it would be fair and motivating for users if the Half Marathon badge were also made repeatable. However it is important the repeatability of the half marathon badge should be 2 points instead of 4, because if it is kept at 4, it will demotivate us to run full marathons. I think that this adjustment would create a more balanced incentive structure, and motivate people to run more half marathons (I know I would).

I also don't think it is fair for someone who can sleep well and doesn't run at all to get a lot of points while I get 0 points for my half marathons.

Thank you for considering this suggestion. I value the efforts Garmin puts into promoting a healthier lifestyle through its platform and badges. I look forward to seeing potential improvements in the badge point system.

Best Regards!

  • You mention something completely different. The one getting the running badges actually had to do an effort to get them. There are no running badges that are repeatable which you can easily earn, so it really took a lot of effort if you want to keep getting points for running. Same for cycling..

For sleep it is just wearing the watch and being lucky the algorithm gives you a good score (assuming you try to get the sleep you need).

The friendly competition between me and my wife will loose much of the fun because she gets the badge very easily while I will be lucky to get the badge once or twice a year despite doing much more to get the sleep I need (which I have to do anyway because of my health).

A solution isn't that hard: add a maximum of 10 or maximum 15 times you can achieve the badge, something they already did with other badges as well.

  • They are very real to me. For example I'm training to run 100 miles for a whole year just to earn the insanity badge.

  • It’s interesting, because I’ve earned the sleep streak badge 5 times already, but it’s not as easy as just going to sleep and hoping for the score… you have to minimise (or cut out) unhealthy foods and alcohol. You have to get to bed early. You have to be active enough (run, walk, cycle) to optimise your sleeping.

I do agree that 4 points every time is over the top… because it’s just such an easy badge to earn. (For some people) I would love to have repeatable badges for certain running activities, currently only marathons and above have that feature.

  • So just normal things: of course alcohol is bad, and eating a big meal before sleep (you can eat unhealthy for the rest of the day) is bad too, that's rather obvious. Also a hard exercise before bed times is also not improving my sleep quality.

Exercising and going to bed early does not matter. Sleep quality and length does. You can go to bed at midnight if you sleep long enough.

I actually just lost my streak since this badge was introduced because I was in a sporting activity till late in the evening but had to get up early the next day, 5h of sleep was not enough to keep the score above 75.

  • I totally agree. Really do not understand this new badge. Is totally unfair. I spent years to gain points, now in 9 weeks a friend of mine just because has a newer watch has earned 45 points.

Why are you doing this Garmin?

  • Couldn't agree more. If it was worth 1 point, no complaints. I know sleep is important but a) you're assuming your sleep detection works (I get a 'better' night of sleep if I watch tv to 3am and then get 3 actual hours of sleep then if I get 8 hours of sleep as garmin interprets it most nights, and I know I'm not the only one) and b) 4 points is over the top when you consider the amount of effort it takes for every other 4 point badge. Some of us really enjoy the point system, and by putting this in and allowing a 208 point year for someone who ONLY gets 'good' sleep you've kind of tarnished all the hard won points for the years coming into this. Keep the badge, make it one point. PLEASE!!!

  • It's even better than that.
On Tuesday I had the streak for 6 days.
On Wednesday, the 7th day I got the badge. And the counter showed 1 day, not 7.
On Thursday the counter showed 2 days.
So the badge is awarded every 6 days.....Do they not test this stuff before releasing it?.
The badge system is flawed anyway, almost any badge can be obtained by cheating, and it's easy. Just look around this site for links. So the only meaningful way to use the badge system is for your own motivation. I don't care how many points anyone else has or how they got them.

  •  course you're right. It's silly and all of this stuff is its own reward, I won't argue otherwise. I just know that among my friends and family we have what's been a fun competition on points, and I have come across folks who have the same within their little Garmin world. I agree the point system has flaws (but this badge is especially skewed IMO), and I have to assume anyone whose point totals I pay attention to are earned not 'gamed', but I do find it motivating (and will probably continue to do so), I just don't feel like doing my work right now and earned it for the first time today so I thought I'd participate in the time honored tradition of venturing onto the internet and complaining.

  • I agree.
4 points for dance 100 times,
4 points for 100x HIIT activities
4 points for 200x HIIT activities
4 points for 50 miles on training bike
    4 points for 500x dives
4 points for 200x Pilates workout
4 points for 200x strength exercise
4 points for 30 everyday swimming training (almost always you need to get up very early morning to have a space on swimming pool)
4 points in 7 days for doing nothing!!
    un fair.
