I don't get why people are still supporting this company

I don’t understand why people are still blindly supporting this company. Almost everything with Garmin is completely incomprehensible. It’s like only made for people who are running, cycling, swimming or walking. If you do any other sports it is just very basic. It is like Garmin is trying to tell you “Why do you even do other sports like gym, weight, circuit, crossfit etc.? We do not even support them.”.

  • You can set custom goal (like 10000 cal September) only via Garmin Connect Web, but not on mobile Garmin Connect App…
  • You cannot create custom challenge and challenge your friends to burn set amount of calories or to burn the most calories in a set amount of time. Like what is the point of having friends, if you cannot challenge and motivate them? Everyone is different, I may love crossfit, the other friend may love running 5k or 10k daily, the other one may love swimming. Why should I limit challenge to only one sport? The reason why you challenge someone is to motivate them to stay active, unless it is some specific challenge like setting a record time for 5k or what.
  • You can connect Garmin Connect with third party apps, you can enable Physio TrueUp but if you have a sensor built in shoes like UA connected shoes, it will not sync the running metrics from the shoes with Garmin watch, even if you manually set a gear used. No matter that you have two separate runs at the same time, one showing GPS map, HR, elevation, cadence, and some other metrics (Garmin), the other one is showing ACTUAL stride length, cadence, foot strike angle, ground contact time (MapMyRun) BUT you cannot sync these metrics into Garmin. Moreover if you run indoors, the GPS in Garmin watch won’t help determine distance, stride lengths and others, while sensor in your connected shoes will.
  • You can create custom Strength or HIIT workout, but animations are shown only in strength mode, not in HIIT and only if you modify existing workout.
  • You can create custom Strength or HIIT workout, set custom rounds, but all rounds have to be same… You cannot have different reps in different rounds like 12 KB swings in the 1st round, 16 KB swings in the 2nd round, 20 KB swings in the 3rd round etc. Is it THAT hard to make option “Same reps in all rounds” “YES/NO” and if you select “no”, then you can manually type reps for each round (or a constant i.e. “+4 reps in every other round”)?
  • You cannot set custom personal record. Why is it so hard to allow user to set let’s say 2 mile run personal record? Come on Garmin, 2 mile run is STANDARD Army Physical Fitness Test.
  • You cannot set a custom benchmarking exercise as a part of your routine to test your physical fitness, because Garmin won’t count all rounds together. Let’s say your benchmarking exercise is 5 rounds of (20 jumping jacks, 20 air squats, 20 butterfly sit ups, 20 kettlebell swings, 20 burpees and 10 single arm kettlebell swings). The only way to see if you have improved is to manually count the time together or to make this benchmarking exercise a separate workout, which will affect the overall time of training (you will get 3 separate workouts – 20 minute running warm up to get the running metrics, 20 minute benchmarking workout and 40 minute strength workout instead of a single 1 hour 20 minute workout). Why is it not possible to set it as benchmarking exercise and make Garmin count the best time as a personal record? Why benchmark exercises have to be only 1RM?
  • If your workout is longer than 10 minutes, the counter will freeze at 4 reps for each exercise and won’t count the reps correctly (even if it did for the first 10 minutes). (dunno if it is a problem with all their watches or just with Venu 2 Plus)
  • sync to Polar Flow? not possible.
  • any motivation and insights from your training? nope
  • training readiness, training status, better interface, workout benefits and recovery time or any other advanced metrics? nope, you have to buy more expensive watches…

There was only one reason why I opted for Garmin even if I was Polar user for the past 11 years (same watch, no problems). I just wanted something more recent and I would stay with Polar. However one of my family members had a tachycardia suspicion and even 7 day and 1 month holter couldn’t prove it because just when she had the holter, she didn’t experience a single episode of tachycardia. As an Android user I didn’t have much options and Venu 2 Plus just had an FDA approval for their ECG sensor. Thanks to ad hoc ECG readings I could prove the actual tachycardia and AFib to her cardiologist, continue with her monitoring and proceed with cardiac ablation.

My question is, if you have a device capable of actually SAVING YOUR LIFE with certified ECG sensor, emergency call, google pay, it has enough internal memory, RAM and CPU, all the sensors, why does Garmin need to limit users with access to other functions, even if you have all the sensors needed? I read here on the forums that people are writing about these things for more than 5 YEARS and the company doesn’t even care to give them any better user experience and change anything in 5 to 7 years, update and add more functions! I haven’t seen a Garmin representative to look inside these forums and say “That’s a good idea. We can/will do this in a period of the next 3-6 months.”. The worst thing is that something so basic like these functions is a matter of few hours of programming. It is just a basic money pumping and people are still loyal, do not complain and just go on with what they have. I really don’t get it.

  • I have a Forerunner 945 instead of venu, and perhaps that is why I am able to do most of the things you say you cannot.  I am able to set custom goals.  I create custom challenges.  I am able to edit the reps and weight of each set after completion in my custom strength workouts (use lap button to end each set).  I don't use benchmarks and I agree that the way it uses total volume only is not helpful.  I use the running dynamics pod with my watch for more advanced running dynamics.  It may not be perfect, but it is far better than any fitbit or apple watch.  Also, best of all is that my 945 does all this on a battery charge that lasts 3-4 times longer than other watches.  I also support Garmin because all the technology behind making the watch; the dynamics, the gps, the altimeter, the firstbeat technology, etc. is all owned by Garmin and those other companies like fitbit and Apple have to buy that software and technology from Garmin to make their watches work with those features.

  • (Just a small correction: Firstbeat technology is not "created by Garmin". It was a Finnish startup that was created by a bunch of Finnish university researchers, and for a long time it was selling its analysis technology to multiple manufacturers. For example, I've had a TomTom sports watch with Firstbeat technology. Then Garmin bought the company in 2020.)

  • Also, I doubt that Garmin "owns" the GPS (chipset) and the barometric altimeter. Garmin tech isn't any more "magic" than anything Apple or Samsung releases.

don’t understand why people are still blindly supporting this company.

I do think that Garmin has a ton of issues, but the basic concept of Garmin watches is very different than anything "modern" (like Apple Watch and Wear OS). This is bad in some ways, but good in others, and I think it's why people stick with Garmin. For example, Apple is never going to make a watch with 3-5 physical buttons (which are all usable by apps). All I want is to be able to start, pause and lap a running activity without looking, but even that isn't possible with Apple Watch, unless I use the Ultra (for the action button) and I use the built-in Workouts app as opposed to a 3rd party app (so the screen doesn't go to sleep after a few seconds). I also like the fact, that for better or worse, Garmin has an integrated running platform on the watch, as opposed to Apple Watch, which relies more an 3rd party apps.

As for the other "traditional" running watch companies, like Polar, Suunto, Coros, etc., I prefer to stick with the devil I know. To me all of them are either less popular or discount versions of Garmin, and if I switched, I'd lose features I like, such as Firstbeat support, Spotify (I'm aware Suunto supports this), 3rd party apps, etc.

There's also the issue that my (original) data is in Garmin Connect, although I guess it helps that I also use Strava and my GC data is backed up / synced elsewhere.

But if you're a new user, I totally get why you wouldn't see the appeal. If I started running today, maybe I'd be happy with an Apple Watch. AW is a much better smartwatch than any Garmin watch.

It’s like only made for people who are running, cycling, swimming or walking.

This is pretty accurate. A lot of runners use Garmins, and imo, most runners use Garmins because their friends use Garmins. This could change very quickly as more people switch to Apple Watch. Personally I wouldn't (at least not yet), but I wouldn't blame anyone who did.

sync to Polar Flow? not possible.

All due respect, not sure why Garmin would do this. Apple doesn't natively sync to Garmin Connect or vice versa, and I wouldn't expect them to.

You could try syncmytracks (android) or rungap (iOS).
