How are the intensity minutes calculated?

I had an MTB ride today with the following minutes on different HR zones:

  • Z5: 5:42
  • Z4: 39:06
  • Z3: 20:22
  • Z2: 13:21
  • Z1: 1:05

And, as an end result, I got 0 moderate intensity minutes and 6 vigorous minutes. Like if only the Z5 minutes were included or something.

I used Edge 1040 on the ride. I have not paid too much attention to Intensity Minutes lately, but this can't be right.

Cheers,

  • Depends on your settings. By default the HR Zones play no role, Resting HR is used instead. If you do not use any device with a HRM during the rest, then it will be difficult to get any IMs with the default settings. See the details here: How Are Intensity Minutes Earned? | Garmin Customer Support

  • OK, but I have an Epix on my arm all day, every day, while this activity was tracked with HRM Pro and Edge 1040.

  • Check the IM settings, and check the all-day HR graph coming from te Epix. Epix is the Primary Wearable Device, hence the HR data comes from it. You'd need to link the HRM strap to Epix and start an activity too, in order to have the same HR data on it (you can discard the activity at the end on Epix, instead of saving, to avoid the duplicate)

  • Thanks for the tips!

I looked at some previous activities and those were just fine with the same or very similar setup, so maybe this was just a glitch. I did enroll in the Epix beta program just last week, so maybe that's the reason.

Let's see what happens next time.

  • I should mention that the double-recording of the activity on the watch and the Edge may currently lead to the doubling of Training Load with certain combinations of devices (despite not saving the activity on the watch). Should it be the case with your configuration too, then another option might be disabling the HRM sensor on the watch, or removing it from the wrist. In this way, the IMs would not be recorded by the watch, and (hopefully) should come from the Edge.
