climbing vs hiking

I have a question about the activity: What is the difference between "Hiking" and "Climbing"? When should I choose an activity? Do these activities differ in the data they collect during their performance? I'm going on a trip and want to avoid something I've had recently regarding kayaking. I chose the "Kayaking" profile, while my friends chose "Rowing". In the case of my friends, they received information about the number of paddle movements, where in the Kajak profile it was not. I was very disappointed, because I was hoping that the device would also measure the number of strokes of the oar. Hence my question is how these "Climb" and "Hiking" profiles differ, it would be nice if could be added differences to "Walking". Because "Walking" counts my average cadence and maximum cadence.

Bo "Chód" zlicza mi średni rytm i maksymalny rytm.

  • Hiking is like walking but usually in a bit tougher terrain, maybe you got a backpack with gear for eating and camping.

Climbing is rock climbing. Climbing mountains or climbing walls. Usually very much vertical. You wear a climbing harness, and use a rope and other climbing gear.

  • Is any difference about data gathering by each activity? also in the context of VO2Max and other statistics?

What about the mountain climbing without rope climbing - walking on mountains from low level terrain to reach some local mountain tops?

  • You will not get VO2 max for either of them. Only running, walking and biking give you VO2 max.

Rock climbing will probably not log any distance or steps. It would be pointless since you are mostly only moving up and down.

Most stats are based on heart rate so that will work the same for all activity types.

Mountain climbing without a rope? Sounds like hiking. You can of course do free soloing, but not many do that and you usually do that vertically. So, if you are mostly walking. Then it is a hike.

  • yhmm, maybe Garmin has differnt dictionary because for "Climb" is an icon of guy with trekking poles and a backpack going up, and for hiking the icon is of guy who is walking on level ground. Both are with backpak and trekking poles. There is no information anywhere about climbing with or without a rope. There is also Bouldering - but this is climbing without a rope on the rocks.

So there is no any differences to use Climb or Hike - it is only just name?

I also thought Kayaking and Row is same, but as it appeared that they gathers difference statistics... that is why I made this post to makes me sure about what are pros and cons of the profile of activity and finally choose the best which suits me.

  • I did a test and the climb profile will log it as Mountaineering so it can be used as Hiking. When it is transferred to Strava it will be logged as Hiking.

I did a test in Garmin Connect and logged an activity as Wspinaczka and it is the Rock climbing type so a completely different type than Mountaineering.

Mountaineering is translated to Alpinizm in Polish so the translations on the watch are not the same as the names in Garmin Connect.

  • I thin it should be reported to Garmin to solve bad translation and inconsequence in naming between watch apps and mobile or web app.

How to get their attention to this thread?

  • How to get their attention to this thread?

It is probably best to create support case for you watch: https://support.garmin.com/

  • I have Forerunner 955 and also checked today for "Wędrówka" (Hiking activity in watch) and it is showing "Piesza wędrówka" in Garmin Connect (as stand alone category, "Hiking" in English) which in Strava is "Hiking".

In other hand "Wspinaczka" ("Climb" activity in watch) is showing at Garmin Connect as activity "Mounteneering" which is part of "Other" category ("Alpinizm" in polish, part of "Inna" category) wich in Strava is also "Hiking".

I have also check "Hiking" activity, that measure cadence for walking, unfortunalty "Climb" does not. Preaty shame, because I tought "hiking" is for walking in forest terraing mostly horizontal with some hills, and "climbing" is activity to climb moutaint tops using dedicated walkingh paths and sometimes use accesories steel ropes on mountain trails. Not rocky climbing - this is separete activity in "Other" category as "Rock climbing" which Forerunner 955 does not have (i think).

Does anybody have different experiece or idea which profile to use in which situaton?
