What is going on with the Garmin Connect Course Planner?

I’m trying to plan a route in Garmin Connect and instead of giving me something reasonable, it’s added in a massive diversion. 19k versus the 13k equivalent route planned with Strava. I have a few quibbles with the Stava route, but it’s far from being completely unusable.

Is it expected for the Garmin routing to be this bad? Are there any settings that might be contributing to this problem?

  • It appears you might be using the "Follow Popular Routes" option. If you use "Follow Roads," the course should be closer to what Strava has created. I tested this and came up with a course that matched closely with Strava. You can then drag course points to get it exactly where you want.

If you prefer Strava's course planner, you can export your saved Strava route as a GPX file, then import it as a course directly into Garmin Connect. This will give you the identical route. Also, you have the option to synch your favorited courses from Strava to Garmin...

Then in Strava click on the star icon to favorite the route, then it will be automatically synched with Garmin Connect as a course.

  • Thanks for the info about starring and I’ll that... I’m already aware.

Follow Roads does indeed provide a more direct route but it takes me on a dangerous dual carriageway with traffic reaching 70mph. There doesn’t seem to be a middle ground. Either the route is very scary or it’s needlessly long.

I’m trying to understand better how Garmin’s routing works. In particular on my Edge, because if it’s anything like the web, I might as well not bother.
