Frustrating that GC Can't Do Basic Things Like Compare The Same Activities

i need to go to a 3rd party like strava to tell me that "hey, you've completed this route 3 other times, your time is improving. click here to compare the matched routes" when they're getting 100% of the data from...garmin connect. what's even more frustrating is that this is something that's been requested for over 12 years...

  • Frustrating that GC Can't Do Basic Things Like Compare The Same Activities

It can. You can compare up to 4 activities in Garmin Connect Web

  • it cannot. that's not what i'm talking about whatsoever. key word is "same" activites. in your example pic, how am i to know which of those "running" activities are the exact same distance and exact same route for a direct 1:1 comparison? strava in the background, automatically matches the same run/bike ride based on garmin connect data and provides a detailed comparison for you. in GC it is a spectacularly manual process. if i bike 3x a week, and take different routes all the time as it's a massive state park, i'd have to remember to label each activity title with each trail (can be a dozen or more) so i can compare like the screenshot you provide. even the slightest deviation invalidates the comparison. hopefully i've labeled it as such out of the 1400+ rides...

strava? do nothing, just ride. it just matches them and you can easily compare them

  • how am i to know which of those "running" activities are the exact same distance and exact same route for a direct 1:1

For the same distance, you can sort the activities by distance. And the distances are also visible on the Activities list. As for the same route - for that I use Segments and my personal leaderboard on the respective segment.

Otherwise, all the additional functionality you can find at Strava is one of the reasons Garmin partners with Strava. In this way they do not need to reinvent the wheel, because you can use Strava for the features not available in Garmin Connect.

  • yeah, so use strava. or training peaks. doesn't change the original message and i strongly disagree with reinventing the wheel. strava's not doing anything other than matching existing gps tracks and segments. from garmin. also then why does garmin even bother to have their own segments? just use strava segments. for that matter, there are a dozen companies analyzing and tracking hrv data. and sleep data. and hr data. and weight data. why should garmin do it? no need to reinvent the wheel after all. come on man. anyway i'm not here to argue. just wanted to vent frustration on what could be a pretty great training tool that we're missing out on unless you pay $80 a year to see your own data that's already collected via a $1300 watch
