I don’t want to walk just to get the steps for the challenges. When I hike then I want to hike but then the steps aren’t being counted for any challenges.

Steps are counted for step challenges, as well as for the expedition challenges, regardless of the type of the activity. In fact you do not even have to start any activity at all for the steps challenges - you'll get the corresponding steps badge as soon as you reach the required number of steps.
You do not get Walk badges for Hikes, but you can change the Hike activity into Walk in Garmin Connect even retrospectively, and you'll get the badge.
Hi everyone, I noticed that in the walking challenges, it doesn't take into account the activities recorded in hiking mode but only those recorded in walking mode. I often use hiking mode for mountain hikes, and it really annoys me that it doesn't take hiking into account for challenges.
Is it a bug or has Garmin never thought about it?

you loose data points in your hike and it doesn’t count towards the goal
Right, you have to choose your priority. And since the goals are fully under your control, I'd suggest changing the goal (if necessary), and logging your activities as walks, if the badges are your priority,
Hiking isn't included in walking challenges. It should be since it is same motions. The terrain may be different but otherwise the same.
