Why is Trekking not in the same category as Walking

I am very curious as to why 'Walking" and 'Trekking' are not in the same category on Garmin Connect?  I find it a bit silly that I could walk 300 miles across Scotland during May (approx 15 - 20 miles a day) and, yet, because it is not classed as 'walking' I did not get my badge for having 'walked' 3 miles over the weekend of 12-14 May.

Can someone tell me why they would not be put in the same category?  I know other people have asked similar type questions about this in the past.

Maybe Garmin could consider changing this.

  • The activity types are not designed to work with the badges and challenges. They are designed so the users easily can classify there training and get good statistics. Most users when they log a walk they will use the main type walking and not the sub type casual or speed walking. Most watches doesn't even have those types. If hiking would be a sub type of walking then all hiking statistics will be included into the walking main type and it would be impossible to get the walking statistics separated from the hiking stats...except by doing some calculations outside of Garmin.

If you believe hiking is walking then log your hikes as walking and you will get the badges. You can change back to hiking after you got the badge.

There were very few activity types in the beginning. Basically the main types with perhaps a few sub types. If you had one of the earlier Garmins you wouldn't see more than a few of the main types. When I look in my 920XT from 2014 I only see a few of the main types and the only sub types I have are run indoor, bike indoor, pool swim and open water. Since then a lot have been added but the main types haven't been changed. I don't think that they should move hiking to walking just so the users get the badges. Good stats are worth more.

    The main types are now:

    • Running
    • Cycling
    • Gym & Fitness Equipment
    • Swimming
    • Wallking
    • Hiking
    • Other
    • Diving
    • Winter sports
    • Water sports
    • Team sports
    • Racket sports
  • I totally get what you are saying about the categories and stuff and, yes, I could record the hiking as walking but I think hiking and walking are the same thing, but hiking is just carrying a lot more weight and walking a lot further.  I just don't understand why, now there are more sub categories (like under my walking I could split it into either casual walking or speed walking if I so wished), they would not categorise them all together.  I am not bothered about my challenge badges, per se. My life isn't controlled by my goal to get them  (lol)  but It seems daft that I can walk all that distance but not qualify for a badge because it's classed as something else when, to me, it is the same thing only a lot further and carrying more weight.
