Garmin Coach Training Plans made redundant?

I'm reading reviews of the two big new watches released today. (May 31, 2023)

One reviewer describes new functionality of now putting a running event (a race) in the Garmin Calendar and the watch will craft and adapt recommendations for workouts leading up to the race.

If it will now just generically build and adapt regular suggestions leading up to a race, isn't this just a variation on the more limited Garmin Coach options? Without the cute videos and texts that are interspersed with the "Garmin Coach" plans. (which are okay, but I wouldn't miss those little vids.)

With a new watch can I now enter a 10K race, 16 weeks in advance, along with a goal time/pace and Garmin Connect will give me daily/weekly suggestions on how to prepare for the race?

"... the watch will offer Daily Suggested Workouts for both Running & Cycling. These can be general in nature (without a goal), or can be driven by a specific goal race on your calendar.

If you put a specific running or cycling event on your calendar, it’ll automatically build out a pretty comprehensive training schedule – including multiple phases (e.g., base, build, peak, taper, recovery), as well as even offer which days you want your long runs/rides. You can see an example of one below:

The system is smart enough that if you’ve had crappy sleep or too much load from something not on the schedule, it’ll pull back the recommendations (or give you a rest day). Same goes for travel, if you’ve added your travel via the Jetlag Advisor feature."

This pretty much looks like a Garmin Coach training plan (without the human faces doing little videos).  I put a race date, and distance, # of running days per week, days for a long run, and the "Garmin Coach" gives me weekly run schedules.

How is the different from what in now in the Fenix 7 Pro?  Again, without the little videos of human coaches?

  • I just learned the adaptive Event-Based "Daily Workout Suggestion" and the "comprehensive training schedule" are not available on my Forerunner 745.

Looks like Fenix 6 was the first with this. Confounded

  • This new adaptive workout plan seems is available in the 255/955 and up Forerunners, and the Fenix 7 and up.

There isn't as far as I can tell a specific name for this feature, but in the Owner's Manuals for these it is described as "Training for a Race Event."

  • Okay, I just figured it out.

Garmin calls this "Garmin Race Widget"

It looks like Forerunner 255 in 2022, is the first to see it, and on up.  On the Garmin retail page one can search by feature and this is one of the filter choices.

My title should read "Garmin Race Widget makes the Garmin Coach feature obsolete"

  • Cool, Garmin just put out a press release with all of these details buttoned up.

It seemed like the hodge-podge of new features I was seeing: Primary Events, Race Widget, Daily Suggested Workouts with a structured training plan, etc. Are all now  "Race Adaptive Training Plans"

    Race Adaptive Training Plans

If you’ve got a specific race or event coming up, Garmin race adaptive training plans will become your new best friend. Simply add your race to your Garmin Connect account, either by selecting a race already within Garmin Connect or creating your own with an accompanying course. Garmin will incorporate information like terrain, direction, windspeed and more into your race time prediction — and then you can add in any specific goals you have, such as time and pace. After you enter your race and goals, we create a training plan built for you that will adapt to your performance and recovery.

Keep in mind that to tailor your training plan to your body’s specific metrics, you’ll need to wear your watch as much as possible (including while you sleep) so it can factor in your VO2 max, your training history and more. Read this blog post to learn more about how Garmin race adaptive training plans  work — and to start training for your next event today.

On the older July 22, 2022 blog post they refer to it is called "Race Widget".   Garmin has a bit of a messaging problem. "Race Adaptive Training Plans" = "Race Widget" both of which are more adaptive thank "Garmin Coach. [As far as I can tell]

Garmin has a messaging problem. Is this Race Widget? Adaptive Training Plan? super-"Garmin Coach?"

  • I just found more Garmin PR about this new hodge-podge of features.  It doesn't really have a goto name, it is more a constellation of features that work together.

"Race Widget" is usually the main name.  Garmin posted a youtube vid. last week.

"Garmin® Race Widget - Train for your race."
