Garmin - Shame on you

 Shame on Garmin.

Environment Day, June 5, 2023 is WORLD WIDE and represents the primary United Nations outreach day supporting the environment. There are conferences, and activities, scheduled all around the world on that day. But of course, the badge is only available for APAC countries, not for any of the other countries in the world.

Shame on Garmin.

And yet Garmin has made badges available for June 3rd 2023 World Bicycle Day, June 7th Global Running Day 2023, and June 10th 2023 Global Wellness Day.

Shame on Garmin.

And here I thought Garmin was an International Company....

  • Well, those are just badges, so nothing important, but sure, those hidden regional limits are simply stupid. No idea why they keep doing it, and also for global events.

But as long as those limits are not explicitly written in a badge description - then should be treated as bugs, so as a workaround, you can change region on garmin.com -> Profile to earn such badge.

  • Well, they are important enough for Garmin to have the badge system, whether some people don't care or not.
And nobody should have to change their country setting to manipulate the system for anything. That's akin to cheating, even if it is for something this small..

  • I agree that users shouldn't have to find workarounds, but I still don't see it as akin to cheating if they do - non-public rules are void.

You see a badge on somebody, read its rules (translated to your language!), fulfill requirement (usually an activity at a given date), so a badge should be awarded, when it's not, then something is wrong.

If you would take part in a real race and organizers would refuse to award a medal for finishing, because you are from a "wrong" country according to their non-public rules, then it would be discrimination, and you could legally force them to give you one.

  • You've gone way off track now. We'll disagee and let's leave it at that.

I think you missed the point of my original post, or you believe that if something doesn't go your way it's OK to find ways to to circumvent a rule.

Garmin is still not right, in my opinion. Especially for a so-called International Company. And by-the-way, the badge system seems to be pushed pretty hard by Garmin and yet stuff like this pops up every couple of months. Minor yes, but still.....

  • I only have a problem with hidden rules. If they officially list all badges on Connect Web with clear regional limits - then fine, they can keep such badges.

Of course they won't do it, because it would look completely ridiculous to display a badge for International events with regional limit, or bad when omitting some countries which celebrate some event.

And this connects with your post, when rules would be public, then they would have to make those reasonable, so world wide events would be for everybody.

  • they don't list them on Garmin Connect, but you can find all of the Garmin Badges on Garwin website.

I agree with your opinion that forcing users to go an extra mile to fully enjoy completing gamification achievements is bonkers.

  • Nice, other user already made: garminbadges.com but choice and backup is a good thing.
