Garmin 965 VO2 Max and Race Predictor Not Updating (even after deleting and importing activities)

Bought the Garmin 965 about a month ago and my VO2 max still remains the same after 27 activities (63). The race estimate also remains the same, despite running a half marathon and full marathon time faster than both. I saw an earlier forum and suggestion to delete the activities and import them again, which I have done but to no success. I know this topic has been discussed ad nauseum but I had no problems with this on my 935. I figured the newer watch wouldn't have this issue. Any suggestions or help on this?

  • For the Race Predictor to change, you have to have a new VO₂max value. When was your last VO₂max value detected? You can see it at best on the Training Status Report at https://connect.garmin.com/modern/report/-1/running/last_four_weeks

If it was not updated recently, have a look at the criteria necessary for the value to be taken:

  • Thanks for the links. My VO2 max has not been updated in a month, exactly when I first used my garmin 965. All my runs are well over 15 minutes. And despite 2 very hard race efforts faster than the race predictor (in addition to several speed runs in between), my VO2 max has not updated. And all of my heart rate data is included on my runs.

My gps is set to auto select and I most run in urban environments. could there be an issue with my gps using auto select?

No, more likely your Max HR, LTHR, Resting HR, and/or HR Zones are not set up properly. Double-check your Max HR and do a test if you are not sure how high it is. Setting it too high may prevent detecting the VO₂max. Disable the auto-detection of the Max HR - it often detects random peeks, and may be far too high for you. I also recommend conducing the Guided Lactate Threshold Test. You will need a HRM chest strap for that though.

  • I went ahead and adjusted my max HR by 2 BPM, slightly below 220-Age calculation. Hopefully this works b/c I am not purchasing a chest strap to get this functionality to work. So far this has been the biggest disappointment with the 965.

I know the VO2 max and race predictors are estimates, but at least my 935 was able to update these metrics in conjunction with the other training metrics.

  • Could you share a link to the activity you think should get you a new VO₂max?

  • Here are my 2 most recent races:

    Full Marathon (May 19, 2023): https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/11173047225

    Half Marathon (May 7, 2023): https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/11173047006

There are other activities with a range of efforts, but these are the only 2 longer distance race efforts where I thought the VO2 max would adjust. Both times are faster than the race predictor (image below)

  • But do you check on the watch after each activity? Just after saving there should be summary with option to see VO₂ max from current activity.

Or on the Web: Reports -> VO₂ max -> Newest (daily)

(to see exact values from previous days you can use DevTools F12 -> Network and edit a date, as by default older are displayed as summary from a week)

  • I followed the link and have at least two runs a week that should create and updated Training Status.  Usually it is 3-4 runs per week.

The Training Status does not show updates since June (3 months).  The Race Predictor is wildly off.  A casual 5k is 6 minutes faster than predicted.  A race 10k would be about 8 minutes faster.

  • > For the Race Predictor to change, you have to have a new VO₂max value

I have the same issue as the original poster that my VO2max has not updated in 3 weeks, despite increasing load and all other indicators pointing to increased fitness, including the race predictor changing.

I actually think that all the math for training status and readiness is correct, but the VO2max is not updated for display.

Noteworthy is the fact that I switched from a Forerunner 630 to a Forerunner 965 2 weeks ago (hence having no HRV status yet).

  • It can go up and down, a watch auto displays probably only a record, but the summary can be opened manually after an activity to be sure what it recorded.

Maybe also check on the Web: Reports → VO₂ Max, but dots omit some values, so it can still look kinda flat.
