Resting Heart Rate - why does Garmin calculate it that way ?

Hello,

I had a look at Garmin's manual and it says the RHR is calculated as follows: "Daily RHR is calculated using the lowest 30 minute average in a 24 hour period".

The effect of this, is that it takes essentially our HR while sleeping, and my reference for this is in this research piece here. Which shows that the RHR is slower by on average 10bpm during the night, as opposed to the RHR during day time. This is a meaningful difference and of significance because the widely accepted definition of RHR, is day time RHR, not night time RHR.

Do you guys understand why Garmin chose to calculate it that way ? I understand it's easier (just take the lowest HR in 24h and voila), but it's also wrong and at the very least shouldn't be named RHR. It's just... "lowest HR in 24h".

Anyway, do you guys know if there is anything more to this and/or understand why Garmin does it that way ?

Thanks.
