How far back do Garmin Connect records go?

I was trying to use the web site interface to gather some old data the other day and when filtering by date I found that there didn't seem to be any records available any earlier than late 2013. I've been using Garmin Forerunners since the original FR100 was released, as well as the early Edge devices, so well before 2013. I'm not sure when the Garmin Connect service started or if there is some reason why earlier records have been cleared out. Does anyone know anything about this?

  • My first run with a Garmin Forerunner 201 was in July of 2004. At the time, we were using Garmin Training Center along with motionbased.com to upload activities to the cloud. Garmin acquired MotionBased in 2005, then migrated activities from MotionBased to Garmin Connect in 2009.

Did you originally use MotionBased so that your activities migrated? At any point did you create a different Garmin account using a different email address? That would account for not being able to view your entire history of activities.

If you meant to say you had the Forerunner 101 (released in 2003), that device had no way to interface with the PC or any mobile device, and certainly not the Internet. That came with the Forerunner 201, which was released a few months later. Even then, it only connected via a 9-pin serial adapter.

  • Actually, I used a desktop app called SportTracks for many years that could read directly from my FR and Edge devices and had some nice database analysis tools, etc. So during that time I never looked at the Garmin site but assumed that my activities were posting there when I regular synced. SportTracks eventually migrated to the web and I was able to sync from Garmin Connect to SportTracks in the same way as Strava works. I no longer subscribe to SportTracks, mainly since my competitive days are over, but had hoped that my old runs, bike tours, etc were stored with Garmin. Oh well...

  • but had hoped that my old runs, bike tours, etc were stored with Garmin.

If he watch was really regularly syncing to a Garmin Connect account either over Bluetooth and the Garmin Connect app on your phone, or over the USB cable and Garmin Express on a computer, then the data is certainly stored, but possibly under a different account than you use today. However, if you did no have the Garmin Connect app active and functional on your phone, and did not use Garmin Express for syncing the data, then the data could not have been synced to any GC account.

  • It's hard to say what exactly happened. I was using and syncing Garmin devices before there were smartphones, Bluetooth, and a Connect app (I think my "smartphone" in those days was a Palm Pilot!). The older devices synced with ANT+ and a dongle that went into a USB port. In the long run, it was a long time ago and a lot has changed, including the "Garmin Connect" branding that wasn't originally used.
