Calories in a custom strength workout

Hello,

I am wondering how calories are computed in a strength workout. More specifically I don't understand whether spcifying or not the excercise will change the calories compute.

I provide an example: does it make any difference in the calories computed if I create a custom workout with 10 sets of 20 reps of push-ups, or if I just start a generic strength workout and I do the same 10 sets of 20 reps?

It is hard to tell empirically since other factors could change from one day to another, such as my heart rate, so the result could be misleading. I just wanted to know whether defining a specific excercise rather than nothing would lead to a different result. I assume the answer is yes, since 20 reps of squat and 20 push-ups do not require the same energy, however it is rather difficult to compute one's energy consumpsion based just on the exercise and heart rate, since this depends on multiple individual factors.

In other words, does anybody know the variables in the algorithm for the strength training calorie consumption?

Thanks in advance for your help

Without getting into the details (because I don't know them)Slight smile this is mostly dependent on heart rate. Including your resting HR. Also, respiration rate, body weight. Typically, my strength training activities do not burn a lot of calories, compared to running activities. Probably too much rest time in between sets. Looking at the HR graph for strength training, my heart rate is not consistently any higher than around 60 to 70% max HR.

The algorithm is not really directly depending on the activity you select. As wrote, it is based on the HR, HRV, respiratory rate, and on a few other parameters. If you want to know the details, have a look at the whitepaper from Firstbeat Analytics, the provider of the algorithms:

  • Thank you very much! the paper is really something I wanted to see, just for further knowledge
