Extremely high stress during the night... that goes away the moment I wake up? (I usually have between 85 & 95 sleep scores and nothing changed on my day to day)

This week 2 separate days my watch reported extremely high stress across the whole night (80 on average approx). My body battery during the night only recharged 5 points.

I haven't changed anything in my schedule that could affect my sleep:

  • I have a lean & balanced diet
  • I workout during the morning
  • I don't eat 3 hours before going to bed (I also don't eat anything hard to digest)

I also know that high average stress during the night could be an indicator of illness, it happened to me in the past when I got the flu.

However, in this case, the moment I wake up the stress seems to go back to normal. Also, I feel fine. Usually in the past when I had a sleep like this (recharging only 5 points during the night) I felt like *** in the morning.

This happened to me on Monday night, then Tuesday was fine, then Wednesday again.

This is my last night:

Compared to most of my regular nights (almost every day I get to 100% body battery easily)

The device I'm using is a brand new Garmin Fenix 7SS.

On Monday this happened with 11.28 stable version on Monday and yesterday with 13.09 beta version, so it doesn't seem to be a firmware-related bug.

Any ideas?

  • Try soft-resetting the watch, and see what happens then. If it does not help, check (or post) the HR, HRV, Stress, Respiration, PulseOx, and  Movement graphs for some more clues. BTW, you can simply copy & paste your screenshots here into the message, you do not need to use 3rd party image servers like imgur. It makes the viewing easier for other users too.

  • Thanks for the advice about copy-pasting images.

My Sleep graph doesn't show movement. Where can I find it?

In case it helps, I just took a Health Snapshot:

I could try the soft reset, but I would like to acknowledge what happens. Soft resetting just feels like overkill.

  • My Sleep graph doesn't show movement. Where can I find it?

Unfortunately, it is now only on the HR graph of the Daily Summary. And the HRV graph is in the section HRV Status on the Daily Summary (you need to click the "View Details" though, to see the graph). The Sleep stages graph may be helpful too.

However, I would first try the soft-reset (no data or settings get lost), and wait for the next night. The BB function may get confused after a firmware update, and the BB baseline may need to be reset in this way. It is always a good precaution to do the soft-reset after any firmware update, or in case of similar problems.

  • The sleep stages don't seem right at all. I didn't wake up and I find it hart to believe I had 0 REM & 0 Deep.

  • You HR during the night was pretty high - much higher than in the day. That is the root of the problems.

  • My usual RHR is 37-39 (average of the latest seven nights).

I find it hard to believe that my body lowers the BPM by almost 40 the moment I read my morning report & wake up.

I can understand that the higher HR shown during sleep could indicate what the watch tells me about my sleep... I'm still pretty convinced those readings are wrong, otherwise they wouldn't magically change the moment the watch stops the "Sleep mode".

  • I do not know what your true HR was. I am just telling you that the HR detected by the watch is the cause of the distortion in the Sleep, BB, and Stress graphs and stats. It is up to you to see what your true HR is, and fix the problem if it is not accurate. Use an alternative HRM, reset the watch, adjust the fit, try wearing it on the other hand, etc. Or have the watch exchanged, if nothing helps.
