Reschedule a missed training plan session

*** When I am logged into Garmin Connect (app or laptop/PC), there does not appear to be any way to move a past OR future Training Plan workout (no "grab dots" on the session bar).  SUPER INCONVENIENT.  I understand that when you're on a "plan" the coach wants you to stick to the workouts as prescribed, but that is not always possible in the real world. ***

This is the only workaround that I found that worked for me on the DAY AFTER a missed training session:

- Pause your training plan in Connect (phone app or laptop/PC)

- Manually recreate yesterday's missed training session in Connect (phone app or laptop/PC) then sync it to your device (not too hard, use the Repeats feature for intervals)

- Complete the manual training session

- Resume the training plan on the app or laptop/PC on the day after your manual training session. If that is a rest day on your plan, then you will have to manually create the 2nd "missed" session from the day before if one was scheduled.  (If you resume the training plan on the same day as the manual session and a different training session was planned for that same day, you won't be able to move that one either. Nobody will stop you from doing 2 session in one day but many of us won't do that.)

I have re-created a few Training Plan sessions like this and named them the same workout name as in the training plan so that if I have to reuse it in the future for a missed session, it's then easier to add the correct manual session to the calendar For instance, instead of saving a manual session as "Run" change the name to "Speed repeats - manual." These created sessions are saved in Training & Planning / Workouts / My Workouts for future use. As training progresses and time/speed/etc. are added to the sessions, it's easy to edit the manually created sessions to keep up with the plan if you miss sessions.

I hope all of this makes sense.

GARMIN - would it be difficult to add a "Date" data field to ANY session (training plan, manually created, etc.) that you could manually change in the Edit mode and it will move the session on your calendar?  I'm not a programmer, but that seems like it would be a very simple work-around for this problem that a lot of people seem to encounter.

  • I found this after frustratingly unable to move a planned workout in any browser (a few chrome based and Firefox to test it was not one of them). It looks like as its a pre-set one from their static trainers that you cannot move them.

I read other searches where people say "drag and drop" but this really does look like a simple feature that has missed the mark.

I even used the App in my phone to see if the calendar can be interacted with to move yesterdays workout to tomorrow (so I can do it) but even in the App it looks like I can only 'remove' it.

Very disappointed and as above and other posts online it should be something that was fixed many years ago. Some dude posted below about the tool will continue the plan and adjust - but this is missing the point, I can fit the schedule in so why not let me intervene? Odd that on the watch, browser (PC) or my phone App none of them present such an option so will explore what workarounds I need to fool the platform until they can bake it in.

  • You need to shuffle training sessions yourself in advance, so as not to 'delete' scheduled plans, as GC will not seem to allow for multiple training sessions on the same day.  When I need to move things around, in advance of course, I usually do all of my own manipulation of the plan and don't allow for it to adjust itself since it won't allow multiple sessions on the same date, even for a moment.  [Hope that makes sense.] As of others have stated, GC (web or app) really doesn't properly allow you to go back and schedule or reschedule a 'missed' workout, so you do have to be proactive with shuffling IN ADVANCE, if you are going to miss a workout.

  • I finally managed to do this yesterday. Christmas day planned workout moved to boxing day! Thanks for the many helpful posts. What I found was that it wasn't possible to do this from the app or browser using Android. I tried on Samsung's built-in browser, Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge on a fully up-to-date Samsung A52s (One UI6, Android 14). The screenshot posted didn't have the reschedule option shown. I tried in mobile and desktop views and tried changing any available layout options. I'm not sure if the screenshot was Android or iPhone. So, it may be an operating system issue or inconsistent handling across different Android phones. Similarly, drag and drop didn't work in any of the above browsers.

But it did work on my Windows laptop. I used the Edge browser and it worked at my first attempt using drag and drop in the calendar view on the Garmin Connect websit. I wouldn't have thought of trying this had it not been for one of the posts. I simply dragged the workout to the following day.

Tomorrow I'll be starting week 11 on a 23-week Garmin training plan. There are 5-6 sessions per week and I haven't missed a session yet. 2 hours on Christmas day would have been an impossibility around family commitments.

Many thanks to the Garmin Community for coming to my rescue. Christmas treeTadaConfetti ball

  • The "reschedule" button is not on my training plan. The text is "edit workout" which only lets you revise the actual parts of the workout. there is no way to move it to a new date... regardless of if the workout has passed, is today, or in the future. Unfortunately, this training plan is not really viable as it never seems to meet my scheduling needs.

  • Which training plan have you started? That doesn't sound like one of the coached plans since you can't edit those workouts.

The Self-Guided Plans have Edit Workout as an option and you can't move those workouts.

You can start a workout in the future. You don't have to plan it for the day. Look in the training calendar on the watch and start any of the workouts there. I can see one month of workouts for the self-guided plans.

  • Agree with what e7andy said.  Not sure exactly which type of plan you have started or are doing, but in my case, for instance, I'm following a 10K Training plan and have selected one of the 3 trainers that Garmin makes available.  You can always "EDIT PLAN" and make small changes to the finish date, or days of the week that you are available to train, etc.  As for "RESCHEDULE", each individual Workout (or RUN in my case) is able to be Reschedule to a FUTURE date only. Once the date passes and you've missed the Run/Workout, I can no longer move or reschedule it.  However, if it is for TODAY or any day in the future, I can move a scheduled Run via the "RESCHEDULE" option in the workout/run itself.  Don't seem to be able to schedule TWO runs in the program on the same day however.  Hope this isn't too confusing and helps you some, Happy New Year all!

  • Ok, let's say 10K Training plan from one of 3 trainers (the same of mine):

(I apologize, I don't know related names in english)
    - Monday: "light run" of 12K
    - Tuesday: idle
    - Wednesday: idle
    - Thursday: repetitions on hill
    - Friday: idle
    - Saturday: idle
    - Sunday: "light run" of 14K

If Monday is raining I would delay 12K run, let's say on Wednesday. Thursday and Sunday trainings will not be automatically delayed, so I have to do it manually.
If also Wednesday raining, I have to manually move repetitions on hill, then place 12K on Thursday.
I expect Garmin connect will automatically detect missing training and automatically delay following training sessions.

  • Garmin Connect will not delay training sessions. A missed workout is a missed workout unless you move it. What will happen is that the following workouts will adapt to your missed workouts so you don't have to worry about it. You don't have to do all workouts. New workouts will be added continuously. The training plan got a fixed end date and a goal that you set. The plan will adapt to that from your performance and try to make it so you reach that goal. There is an indicator in the plan that tells you if it is likely you will reach that goal.

Note that you don't have to do the workout that is planned for the day. You can take any of the other workouts and do them instead. Just start them from the training calender in the watch. So, skip some workouts, do some in advance. No need to move them around.

When you move around workouts the plan will adapt so it will not always be what you expect it to be.

  • EmBer - if raining on Monday, you would need to MANUALLY move your "light run" of 12K to another day before 11:59pm Monday, otherwise it will be considered a "Missed Workout" and you cannot change that or reschedule it.  GC will adjust your workouts and plans, but if you're like me, and hate to miss a scheduled workout completely, then you have to make sure to manually adjust your assigned/scheduled workouts yourself.

So, YES, if raining also on Wed. when you are now supposed to do 12K Run, and you want to keep the order of workouts as is, then you will need to do something like this:  move "Repetitions on Hill to Friday, then move "12K Run" to Thursday.

As for how well GC will detect missing training and delay or change, it seems to me that it doesn't really modify (make changes) within the same week, but will adjust your training to keep you on pace with your plan beginning the NEXT week.  This is just my opinion and what I feel like I've seen in my GC 10K training plans.

  • OK so some progress. Whilst I cannot drag and drop in calendar like some people seem to be able to do, what I can do is as long as the workout has not passed, I can reschedule it. However, I had to on modern chrome browsers disable ad block or popup protection in order for the sidebar to function (use calendar etc.).

I have moved a couple of workouts lately to another day so now know not to miss the boat if I think I wont be able to do a scheduled time/day.
