Reschedule a missed training plan session

*** When I am logged into Garmin Connect (app or laptop/PC), there does not appear to be any way to move a past OR future Training Plan workout (no "grab dots" on the session bar).  SUPER INCONVENIENT.  I understand that when you're on a "plan" the coach wants you to stick to the workouts as prescribed, but that is not always possible in the real world. ***

This is the only workaround that I found that worked for me on the DAY AFTER a missed training session:

- Pause your training plan in Connect (phone app or laptop/PC)

- Manually recreate yesterday's missed training session in Connect (phone app or laptop/PC) then sync it to your device (not too hard, use the Repeats feature for intervals)

- Complete the manual training session

- Resume the training plan on the app or laptop/PC on the day after your manual training session. If that is a rest day on your plan, then you will have to manually create the 2nd "missed" session from the day before if one was scheduled.  (If you resume the training plan on the same day as the manual session and a different training session was planned for that same day, you won't be able to move that one either. Nobody will stop you from doing 2 session in one day but many of us won't do that.)

I have re-created a few Training Plan sessions like this and named them the same workout name as in the training plan so that if I have to reuse it in the future for a missed session, it's then easier to add the correct manual session to the calendar For instance, instead of saving a manual session as "Run" change the name to "Speed repeats - manual." These created sessions are saved in Training & Planning / Workouts / My Workouts for future use. As training progresses and time/speed/etc. are added to the sessions, it's easy to edit the manually created sessions to keep up with the plan if you miss sessions.

I hope all of this makes sense.

GARMIN - would it be difficult to add a "Date" data field to ANY session (training plan, manually created, etc.) that you could manually change in the Edit mode and it will move the session on your calendar?  I'm not a programmer, but that seems like it would be a very simple work-around for this problem that a lot of people seem to encounter.

  • You can reschedule a workout that is planned for the current day or a future day.

    View the calendar https://connect.garmin.com/modern/calendar
Click the workout and then click Reschedule and select the new date.

You can also select Reschedule from the Coach page in both the web and app.

If you move around the workouts sometimes the workouts will be rearranged since the plan is adapting. I moved a workout to a day that already had a planned workout which made the previous workout to be removed. My plan was to switch places between them, but the coach was faster than me :-)

  • Very helpful, thank you! But if it is a missed workout that does not appear as an option Disappointed  I've even tried pausing and resuming the training plan on the same day just out of curiosity, and it just skips the workout for that day even though there's plenty of time left to get it done.  I'm going to have to be more mindful to make schedule changes earlier but sometimes it's not possible.  I really appreciate the assist!

  • Thanks, this work around works.

  • If you use the web interface (https://connect.garmin.com/modern/calendar) you can literally drag and drop a mised training session from a previous day. This even works on a mobile web browser. But I can’t find a way to do it in the app.

  • Can elaborate on this? I just tried to drag and drag on the calendar in Mozilla Firefox. I wasn't able to drag and drag and drop any event.

  • I have two training plans. One is for cycling 100km, the other is a Garmin Coach 5K.

The cycling training plan, i can drag and drop planned workouts, doesn't matter if past, present or future.

The Garmin Coach, I can only reschedule through the Garmin Coach interface present and future workouts. Can't drag and drop them in the calendar interface. It would really nice to have the option to drag and drop this one as well, since I was sick on Saturday and wasn't able to get to the computer to reschedule before it was marked as "skipped".

  • The fact that this has nearly 4000 views shows how many people are missing this feature, when every other post has <1000.

Really odd to have this feature missing (and it's been missing for years looking at the posting history) - First time using a training plan, was enjoying it, got sick so took 2 rest days, was psyched to catch-up today with my long and easy run, but no way to do it...

Belatedly learnt I could have paused the training plan at the time, but this doesn't help me now.

Not sure why it's so hard to implement?

  • please implement the ability to reschedule past events... please

  • Hi guys, I am newbie about Garmin training plan sessions....

I started a running 5k session and I set available training days.

Sunday: planned session I nedd to skip for many reasons.

Wednesday: first available day for training, but alteady present another training session for sane plan.

I can move "lost" session to Wednesday but it asks to me "do you wanna erase Wednesday session?"

So, if I say yes, Wednesday session will be erased or Wenesday session (and all following traninig sessions) will be delayed?

    Thanks.

  • The coach plan adapts to the training you do and you will not know what will happen with future workouts. Usually you will only know about a week ahead what workouts to do. Move this workout if you really want to do just this workout. Otherwise just skip it.
