Determine race pace when using a hearthrate plan

Hi everyone,

I started running in july and used the Garmin Coach 5k plan. That went really well and I'm currently on my 10k plan and want to step up to a HM after this.

With the 5k plan there where no real longruns, but with the 10k plan I did had one so far (5 weeks into the plan) but this was nearly as fast as my tempo runs so not really a zone 2 exercise, and I'm affraid the same will happen with the Garmin coach HM plan.

Allthough my progress so far is really good, I do think I could benefit from more Z2 training for the HM, thats why I lean towards a hearthrate based plan in stead of the Garmin coach plan.

What I would like to know is how you race pace is going to be determined when using that plan? Is is within a certain heartrate zone?

I would be perfectly ok with just following that plan and run whatever pace comes out to be perfect for me.

What would be your recommendations?

Just for reference in case anyone wonders;

I trained the 5k for 25min and ended up 23:17 comfortably (Garmin predicted 22:59)

Currently I'm training for the 10k with a 44min goal and after 4 weeks I'm borderline purple on the confidence scale.

Thanks in advance,

Dennis
