Please implement separate segments for runners and for bikers

Dear Garmin,

I always wondered how difficult it is to separate cyclers from runners when it comes to segments. When I check the leaderboard of a segment I do not want to see cyclists who cycled a segment that takes me 20 minutes to run in 4 minutes cycling. Do you get my point? Either you implement something that makes sense or do not implement it at all.

Whoever creates a segment has to DECLARE the segment as for cyclists or for runners. I understand that someone could be training on bicycle and running. It has to be two separate segments, one for runners and one for cyclists. In alternative, there could be an option to filter activities according to type. If I choose "show me only runners", I expect to see users who logged their activity as running. With all the artificial intelligence around us, your solutions could be smart to filer out those performances that are not humanly possible.

The leaderboard as it is shown now is nonsense.

The segments already are separated in that way. The problem is when someone mistakenly or intentionally selects the wrong activity type - for example selecting a Run activity, while actually cycling, or (for example) riding a scooter. Similarly it also happens when someone completes a run, or a bike ride, forgets to stop the activity, and then goes home by car, crossing some of the segments.

Still, it would be certainly nice, if there was a possibility to report such cases, or if at least some basic filtering of completely impossible results was implemented. Consider suggesting it to Garmin at Share Ideas | Garmin. I did it already in the past, but only massively requested features have a chance to be implemented.

  • I overlooked the creation part and forgot of this option. I see what you mean and I agree. Perhaps the system administrator could make use of some clever algorithms to remove or reallocate those performance that are not achievable such as running 4k in 5 minutes

This has been going on for quite a while, as I've documented here - Validity of leaderboard segments

Yes, with all activities' data it would be possible to classify them by type automatically. For example by stride length, 8 meters is not running. But such software finds more outstanding data to segregate results, parameters which are not always so obvious.

It could be feature for all, not just segments, would minimize manual edits of type.

It would classify automatically or/and propose few possible types, currently you need to choose from the long list, so some users don't care to set a type after forgetting to choose on a watch.
