Connect changes route / track ( end point) independently after adding a route point and then trying to edit again.

Hello, the following procedure :
1) Select create track.
2) track type (run here - possibly other types affected).
3 )Drawing method "user defined".
4) User defined drawing method "Freehand".
5) Draw track on map
6) Save new track

Attention, please remember exactly where the red destination symbol is currently ! AND remember the indicated track length !

7) Edit menu
8) Add track point
9) Save point

10) Menu item "Save changes"
11) Menu item "Edit
12 ) Lo and behold, Connect has moved the destination, or changed the track completely. But the specified track length has remained the same.

13) The problem does not always occur at the first opening. In this case repeat point 11 (click on "edit" again).

Possibly also repeat this point 3 or 4 times (so repeat "edit" - "discard changes" several times).

At some point, however, it happens that the track changes on its own, without you having done anything yourself.

Am I the only one with this problem ?

I have been able to reproduce the problem myself on several computers - both MAC and Windows - several times. Also with THREE different user accounts and different tracks.
The problem is not tied to a specific computer or operating system, nor to a specific user account or track.

Unfortunately very bad video quality. Unfortunately I can only upload a maximum 52 MB file here :

You can download the video in original quality here :

  • I don't see screens in your post, but if I got this right - you mean that last part of a route is cut after saving and distance stays.

Then yes, it used to be like that when creating Segments. You needed to select one part more to get correct path, best when last one was very short.

Though some time ago it seems to be fixed for Segments, but I didn't check for longer. And you create a Course, which is similar, but a bit different. Probably code is similar, so could be same problem.

    Then yes

Thanks for the quick reply !

Yes, that is exactly what I mean.

This makes it impossible in Connect web to edit a route afterwards and add more route points. I have a half marathon on Sunday that I have planned in Connect. After I added Some route points, and saved, all was still good.

But when I then wanted to add more route points, and clicked "edit" again, the finish point moved. But the route length remains unaffected.

If I now extend the route back to the original destination point, the route length becomes too long.

It cannot be that the user must apply here any tricks, so that then sometime the correct data come out thereby.

    Garmin, please fix ASAP.

I have contacted Product Support with the problem.

It would certainly be helpful if anyone who finds the same problem does so as well.

  • The maximal number of course points is limited, so if you add more than the limit, Garmin Connect will remove some of the existing ones. For example at Instinct, the maximum number of Course point is 50: File Limitations of the Instinct Series | Garmin Customer Support

If it is not possible to create a fitting course with this limitation, you could try creating the course in an external application supporting the FIT file format, putting it directly on the watch (folder //GARMIN/Courses), and see whether it then works. I did not test it, it is possible the watch will refuse to use the course, or will crash, so be sure to test the entire course.

For example at plotaroute.com you can export courses in the FIT file format.

Thanks for the answer, however this problem affects ANY drawn track "TRACK" in Connect. Try it yourself ! A few points to draw a lap on a 400 meters run track are enough. It has nothing to do with a limit.Do the test, following my instructions above.

There is an error in Connect here.

So your answer is not applicable here.

  • I checked - you can get it easier.

    1. Create a single line with Start and Stop, add a Route Point about at the middle. Save.
    It's 400 m.

    2. Edit and ta-da! - Stop moved to position of the Route Point.
    Distance still shows 400 m.

    3. Export as GPX and open in some editor. There is some return.
Check distance and it's about 660 m. So actually last part is not cut but duplicated.

Hold the middle point and move it, so you see clearly that returning part, which was added from Stop to the Route Point.

    So ye, it's terribly broken.

  • Thank you for your test and confirmation that there is a bug in Connect here. That is exactly how it is.

  • @Garmin  devs : any solution in sight ?

  • Just another recording of the issue.

Also kind of reminds me about the issue that when you want to trim an activity, you zoom in to get the exact point on the map, but as soon as you touch the trim slider it zooms out to show the whole course, making finetuning impossible.

  • Thank you for your report Thumbsup
