Resting Heart Rate is estimated automatically sporadically and widely inaccurately

I am using Garmin's Edge 1040 cycling computer with a chest heart rate monitor. Over the last week, Garmin estimated resting heart rate based on a cycling activity, for two out of several such activities. The estimate was approximately equal to the lowest heart rate during cycling, and so completely inaccurate. It screwed up InsideTracker connected to Garmin Connect and Fitness Age calculations within Garmin (and maybe more). Can I delete resting heart rate estimates from Garmin Connect, without deleting the corresponding cycling activities? Can I stop Garmin making automatic resting heart rate estimates? Garmin also automatically estimated sleep length, even though I have not used the heart rate monitor during sleep. Can I disable Garmin's sleep estimates, too? The Garmin Connect web app and the Garmin Connect iPhone app seem to show the same data. Manually editing the resting heart rate in heart rate user settings on Edge 1040 does not help Garmin's Fitness Age calculations and does nothing to Garmin's automatic resting heart rate estimates.

Thank you, Andrej

  • Another one having the same issue. It’s started doing this in the last few days and I’d swear I’ve not changed any settings. Like Andrej, it’s a completely inaccurate figure as it’s taking it from when I’m actually exercising not resting. Come on Garmin, sort this out.

  • The Resting HR is not being estimated, it is being measured during your sleep or during the rest, as the lowest 30 min average in a 24 hour period. Make sure you wear the watch (or the strap connected to Edge) while you are still really resting for minimally 30 minutes.

If it is not possible, disable the option "Use Average" in Device Settings » User Profile » Heart Rate & Power Zones » Heart Rate » Resting HR (the path may differ, depending on the device), and set the Resting HR manually.

  • They DONT have the watch. That’s the issue. It only calculates correctly when I have/use the watch. So when you use a Garmin cycling computer it’s way off.

  • They DONT have the watch.

That's exactly why I am telling to put on the strap (and start the activity) minimally 30 minutes in advance and staying still, or just setting the Resting HR manually.

  • And I can tell you from experience, unfortunately that does not work

  • What does not work? Wearing the strap during a 30 minutes after starting the activity and resting, or the disabling of the auto RHR average, and setting of the Resting HR manually?

  • Edge 1040 does not have RHR average setting, and setting resting heart rate manually in your profile does not affect fitness age. Wearing the strap while resting with bike computer turned on is kind of ridiculous

  • to clarify for me. I've got a 540, no Garmin watch. When I put on the hr strap, ready to go out for a ride, it records a "resting heart rate" as I am faffing around prepping the bike. Clearly that's not a real resting heart rate. Yes, I can ignore this, and delete it manually (every day it tries to reset my Training Peaks resting heart rate), but it would be a whole lot simpler if Garmin coded its programming properly, or gave me an option to turn off this "facility". I can't find any such option on the Garmin 540, nor in Garmin Connect app nor on website. Some of the stuff Garmin stuff is great. But this, like so much other Garmin stuff, is just, er, so "Garmin".

  • For the exact reasons repeated here several times - Edge is normally not being used while resting - it is really hard to believe it is not possible to set the Resting HR manually on Edge, when it is possible on watches.

Please reverify your settings. If the setting is not on the path I posted previously, then have a look in the section with HR Zones. If there is really no possibility to set it manually, I recommend contacting the Support, and asking them how you can do it. In the meantime, putting on the strap, and starting a dummy activity on the Edge while you are still resting, is currently your only option to get it right.

This is the screen where the Resting HR can be adjusted manually on watches:

  •  Well it looks like this might be about to be fixed for me. According to this www.notebookcheck.net/Garmin-Edge-540-and-Edge-580-bike-computers-receive-new-features-with-Beta-19-08.760054.0.html there's a new beta for the 540 which will enable me to manually set resting HR. I don't have this yet but perhaps they also made other anticipatory changes to the software that explain why it has recently started trying to estimate it from rhr when I'm not resting. Fingers crossed.
