Simplest Way to Reset Lap Markers to Miles?

I accidentally hit the lap button on my FR 645M during an activity, and would like to delete the accidental lap marker.  I know this question used to get asked a lot, but the forum threads are from years ago.  I'm wondering if there's any new software that will automate or make it simpler than editing the text file by hand?  FIT File Tools was always recommended.  Is that still a good choice for what I want to do?

But if I have to edit the file myself, and I delete a lap section and re-upload the file to Garmin Connect, will it re-process all the laps, so that they appear on each mile with correct per-lap stats?

Thank you!

  • I would use Fit File Repair Tool for setting laps. It will do exactly what you need. It does require a license. Might be worth it if this is something you need often. Otherwise, post your activity here and we can fix it for you.

    • Zip the file, then in a reply post Insert >> Image/video/file >> click Upload >> browse for file >> OK.
    • Or upload the fit file to a file sharing service, such as OneDriveGoogle DriveDropbox, etc., make the file public, then paste a link to the file in your post.
  • Thanks for the offer.  I've hit that Lap button accidentally more than I'd like to admit, so I wanted to finally learn how to do the fix myself.  But unless I'm missing something, none of the free online tools are working for me.

If it's not too much of a burden, would you be able to process 2 recent files that are particularly important to me?  In the 1st file, the accidental lap is #6, and in the 2nd file, it's #16.  If not, I understand, I'd still appreciate being able to see if this repair can be done.

I messed around with GOTOES Utilities for Strava and Garmin Connect, which doesn't seem to help.  I had hope for Garmin online fit repair tool, but it just crashed when I tried to upload a file.  And then there's FIT File Tools, and from what I could find, it only allows deletion of ALL laps.  I'm wondering if I use this to delete all the laps, then upload the file to Garmin Connect Web, would it re-process all the per-mile lap markers?

Also, many guides for deleting a lap involve editing the tcx file, or converting the fit to a csv.  Sure, that would let me easily delete the offending laps, but I would have to re-calculate and code all the lap data by hand, which would be practically impossible.

Anything else out there worth trying?

Basically, Fit File Repair Tool can create an overall lap

then create 1 mile laps, repeated iteratively.

  • Thank you!  You've helped out a lot of people in the Garmin forums.

By any chance, are you the developer?  Because I think there may be a bug.

Obviously, all the per-lap stats after the accidental lap marker will be different, but up until that marker they should be exactly the same.  And they're not.  Even more worrying, some of the global stats have changed.  For example, in the original file I have a total ascent of 5082 ft, while in the processed file it's 5364.  Is there some other reason why this could be happening, besides a miscalculation?

  • By any chance, are you the developer?

I am not the developer. If you go to the site, there is a contact page here - fit file repair tool - Contact. The developer is very helpful and quick to assist. However, I have paid to use the software.

Not sure exactly what you want or if it's even a bug. Probably just user error if I did not understand what you wanted. I assumed you wanted 1 mile splits, but guess I'm wrong.

  • No, you understood me perfectly.  In the files you fixed, the lap markers occur every mile (Well... almost.  Sometimes laps are 1.01 mi).

However, I noticed some data has been altered that really shouldn't have.  Like, which value is correct?  Did I go up 5082 ft or 5364?

But I greatly appreciate you took the time to help.  Thanks.

  • That example is shocking!  But I understand how it could happen.  Garmin Connect is making a lossy conversion from its native fit format to gpx, then doing another lossy conversion from gpx back to fit.

But I still don't understand why the activity stats should change when the file format remains the same.  In this case, I'm exporting as fit, then importing as a fit. Unless, the Fit File Repair Tool is doing an internal conversion from fit to gpx and back?!  As you showed in your example, that would completely explain the discrepancy.

I have Smart Recording enabled on my watch, but that just affects when and how often the watch samples all the sensor data.  Once the the data is off the device and in Garmin Connect, the Smart Recording setting shouldn't matter.

Whatever the case may be, it looks like editing the lap markers isn't a simple task!  No wonder it's been showing up in the forums again and again for over 10 years.
