Can a device be paired to more than one account?

I bought a second-hand Garmin device (Forerunner 735XT) and tried the 'clear user data' function when this arrived but did not do a full reset (my mistake at the time). However, the activities/badges from the previous owner of the device are still connected to my account so I'm not sure if this worked.

I have connected the device to my Garmin account and begun to use the watch but now wanted to check about data security. Could the device still be linked to the previous user's account, or can it only be connected to one account at a time? Is there any way to check this/disconnect the device from my end?

If possible I don't really want to lose my data that I've saved since I got the watch by doing a factory reset. Are my activities linked to my account or the device? It seems like the activities must be linked to the device, since my account now contains all of the previous user's activities. Therefore, if they are also able to see all my activities with GPS then I would obviously want to reset anyway if needed.

All very confusing, any explanation of how it works would be appreciated!!

  • If you created your account and synced it with the watch, then activities saved on the watch would get synced. So the account should only get a limited number of activities which were on the disk, not all from the other account.

So re-check dates and count of those old activities and that you log-in to proper account.

  •  is probably right, and just some old activities staying on the watch got synced to your account. But to be sure to get rid of any remaining data, you can perform the full factory reset, including the removal of user data, now. It will not wipe out the data you already synced to Garmin Connect, but it will reset diverse counters, personal records, and other metrics and stats from the original owner that may be still stored on the watch. Delete any activities from Garmin Connect that do not belong to you, manually.

You can also try following the steps from the document Data is Missing from My Garmin Connect Account After Syncing | Garmin Support to clear up any association to multiple GC accounts.
