Different GPX when exported from activity and from course

Hello,

I observe the following, in my understanding, strange results when exporting an activity or a course to a GPX file: I have an activity which I have recorded on my fenix 6X that has been sync'ed to Garmin Connect, then I directly create a course from it, without editing anything but the name, so this course is actually supposed to be an exact copy of that activity.

But when I create a GPX file exporting from the activity itself or when the course, I have different results, in the amount of points of the GPX track, in the elapsed time, and eventually even in the length of it. I am including en example:

- Activity:

https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/embed/9270454834

Gives me a GPX with 5345 points, 15.7Km, 5h 47 mins of elapsed time (3:57 moving / 1:20 stopped)

- Course created from the above activity:

https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/embed/125855540

Gives me a GPX with 1558 points, 15.4Km,  3h 43 mins of elapsed time (3:20 moving / 23 mins stopped)

How come? I would expect that the actual GPX/track would be the same in both cases.

  • Exported courses got lots of extra trackpoints per second. The number of points probably depends on how the course is drawn. If it can draw straight lines fewer points are needed and if you are doing lots of turns more points will be used. When you convert an activity to a course it will map the points from the activity and try to draw "correct" lines and arcs between them.

Check the GPX files and you will see the difference.

The activity can only have maximum of 1 trackpoint per second. It depends on which tracking you have. Smart or every second.

The difference in distance is likely due to the inaccuracy in using fewer trackpoints.

  • Hello e7andy, thank you very much for your answer! From what you say I understand that courses get extra -more- trackpoints, whereas my observation is that it has far way less...

However, as I say, I was assuming that the track of an activity and the one of a course are a replica, while from what you say I understand that this is not the case, and that the course track gets rebuilt/recalculated upon creating the track, right?

  • Oh, I see now that you didn't get more trackpoints. I got that in my tests, but it was for a much shorter activity (5 km and 30 minutes). I don't know why. It could be that it didn't need all those points to create the course. Since you were moving slowly and had lots of stop time then it could strip those away.

  • Hello,

I have the exact same issue. I ride an activity. When I want to use the activity as a course, the number of points in the course seem to drop, as the GPX is far less detailed. Very frustrating, as I run into navigation issues during MTB biking.

Anybody got any resolution for this?
