how to stop auto-update of HR zones?

About 2-4 times per month my FR245 will report erroneous HR, showing that my HR is 190-220 for 1-3 miles before reverting to the truth, which is usually 140-160, depending on the workout. Annoying, but I can live with it.

However, Garmin Connect then automatically "updates" the max HR that I have manually set, which in turn completely screws up my HR zones. I have manually set the min and max at 46 and 187 based on fairly reliable testing and I want the watch and GC to leave them there. Even if I can't stop the erroneous HR readings, can I at least make GC (or the watch) stop changing my max HR setting? At present, each time I have to reset the max back to 187 manually via GC. Thanks.

  • Turn off the auto detection of Max HR, or do not base the HR Zones on % Max HR. It is in Device Settings » User Settings » Heart Rate

  • Thanks. Sorry for being dense, but I'm looking in Device Settings > User Settings > Heart Rate Zones on the Garmin Connect web interface and I'm not seeing anyplace to turn off auto detection of Max HR. Should I be looking somewhere else? I looked on the GC iOS app and the watch settings and don't see anyplace to turn off auto detection there, and the web interface seems like the place it be.

Fwiw, I've been using % of HR Reserve, but since Max HR is part of that calculation it seems the best way is to keep the Max HR that I enter from getting changed. Thanks again.

  • I am not familiar with the FR245, I just gave the path that works with the last generation of Garmin models. However, if you want fixed HR Zones, do not base it on the %HRR - it is not only depending on Max HR, but also on the avg Resting HR, which may fluctuate greatly too. If you want fixed HR Zones, base it on BMP, and enter the values manually. They won't change.

  • Okay. Unfortunately I'm not seeing either a place to turn off auto update of Max HR, and the only options for setting heart rate zones appear to be % Max HR and % HRR. There is no option for manually setting them. Maybe those options aren't available for the FR245. I can try typing in the max BPM for each zone, but it's still under the calculations of % Max and % HRR, so I expect those will get messed up again the next time GC auto-updates the Max HR.

I'll also try addressing the problem at the source by pulling out my old Scosche Rhythm+ HRM, because that almost never had issues with wildly erroneous readings. And if GC doesn't get erroneous data then it shouldn't think that the max HR needs updating.

    Thanks for your advice.

  • OK, looks like you do not want to check out the manual, so I did it for you Slight smile

As for the Max HR auto-detection:

FORERUNNER 245/245 OWNER'S MANUAL - Detecting Your Heart Rate Automatically

And as for the HR Zones based on simple BMP:

FORERUNNER 245/245 OWNER'S MANUAL - Setting Your Heart Rate Zones

  • Heheh, usually I am very good about RTFM, but this time you got me. Touché!

Following the fine manual, I just turned off the auto-detection of Max HR. I'm betting that's all I'll need because it hasn't been giving me flaky readings on resting HR. But if necessary I'll use your link to set the zones manually.

Thanks a million, this is truly helpful.
