VO2max

Hello,

I use the Edge for cycling and the Fenix for running and other fitness activities. In Garmin connect I have a VO2max and a VO2max cycling. Is the first VO2max for running? So why isn't it called VO2max running? Is the VO2max the decisive and only value in GC against which I measure my current performance?

Thx

  • It isn't just for running. It is also for walking and all-day heart rate.

Your training load is also important for your performance. VO2 max and training load is used for your training status.

  • I just expected that if there is a cycling VO2max, there should also be a running VO2max and a
    third universal VO2max.

In another program, I see that after weeks of hard training, I have greatly improved my fitness. I don't see this effect with Garmin's values. The training load only ever refers to the last 7 days. The VO2max changes only slightly by very few points and the training status usually just says "Maintaining". Where do I primarily see my increased fitness after e.g. a 3-month training preparation?

  • The VO2 max value over time is what you should look at.

Make sure your max heart rate is correct. Do a lab test.

  • Is the VO2max the decisive and only value in GC against which I measure my current performance?

Depends what performance you mean. VO₂max is an important indicator of your aerobic cardiovascular fitness, but it does not mean the performance is proportionally changing with the VO₂max. First of all it depends on the discipline, and on the type of the performance. Also, VO₂max tells little about your technique, efficiency, strength, power, endurance (well, this one might be more related to VO₂max than the others), or about your anaerobic capacities, while they do play an important role for the performance - and at some disciplines, or at some distances, the importance of those other factors may be more important than VO₂max.

So if you need a reliable indicator for the evolution of your performance, the best way is occasionally doing max performances (but not too often either).
