Training status using Edge (cycling) and Fenix/Epix watch (running)

Hello,

I use the Edge for my cycling activities and find the training status very interesting. Now, if I would use a Fenix/Epix watch for running, do I have ONE training state for cycling and running, or do I have TWO training states per device (i.e. one for running and one for cycling)? If this is not sensibly combined with the training status of different devices, I tend to get a venu2 instead of the Epix. Unfortunately, the venu2 not have the training status function, but then that would not be so important.

Thx

  • You will have two training states because you will have two different VO2 max. The training load will be the same if you remember to sync the Edge before each ride.

If you only have a watch you will only see one training status but it will be for either the running or cycling depending on which VO2 max that will be used.

  • Ok, but actually it would be more logical to have ONE VO2max regardless of the sport, right?

So if I run, say, a marathon and record with my Vivoactive (without training status function),
then I have no effect on my training condition (for cycling / edge),
but at least my training load (for cycling / edge) is increased?
  • It would be logical but that is not how the body works. The VO2 max are dependent on the sport the athlete do. It can be the same but it is unlikely since most people don't balance their training that good.

If you do training with a device that calculates the training load it will affect the training status for both running and cycling no matter what activity you do since the training load is one of the main components for the training status. The training status is calculated on the device so you must sync it twice for the training status to be updated. First sync is to get the data from Connect to the device. The second sync is to upload the new training status to Connect.

  • Ok, one more advice please. I'm considering getting an Epix watch (with training status) or a venu2 (without training status). Running is only secondary for me (1x a week) and cycling is important (3-4x a week). If I understand correctly, does the Epix watch only give me running VO2max? So I would also drive well with the combination of Edge and Venu2?

  • Epix will give you cycling VO2 max if you log your rides with the Epix. Epix will also log the training load from your runs that is then used by the Edge to calculate the training status.

Venu 2 does not have any of those functions so the training load and recovery time etc from your runs will not be used in the Edge.

  • Ok, that's the whole point then. My runs are only calculated in the Edge (and thus displayed in Garmin connect web with the training load/training status) if I recorded them with an Epix, but not if I recorded them with a Venu2? And that even though the runs that I record with the Venu2 are displayed in the Edge in the log after the sync?

  • The Venu 2 doesn't calculated load or VO2 max so it will not send those values. You will see the logged activities from the Venu 2 on the Edge, but no data from it will be used in calculating training status or 7 day training load etc. since there is no data to use.

If you are interested in the advanced training analysis you need to buy devices that got those functions.

  • Thank you Andy! That was important for me to know. So it will probably go in the direction of the Fenix/Epix and not the Venu2.
