Garmin connect not adding cycle ride to stats

I use a Fenix 6 for non cycling activities and and Edge 830 for cycling.

Until recently everything has worked fine but yesterday I did a 40 mile ride and although the ride and all the stats show in Garmin connect non of the details of the ride contribute to my daily stats such as activity minutes or heart rate stats.

What has gone wrong and how do I fix?

  • The Edge doesn't have intensity minutes and the heart rate logged in the activity will not be used in the daily timeline. The intensity minutes and heart rate on the daily timeline comes from the Fenix 6.

You probably didn't wear the Fenix 6 on your ride.

  • That is not correct, I have been using this setup for many years. I have attached 2 screenshots, one from last week that shows how it has been working and one from yesterday where I did a 30 mile & 10 mile and it is not showing correctly

  • That is very interesting and I wonder how it works since Edge devices do not have the function intensity minutes. I checked my history and I also see intensity minutes reported for my Edge 1030. I always wear my FR945 so I wonder if that can be the reason.

The intensity minutes I get for my rides are very low and that indicates that the heart rate reading used where low which is often the case with optical heart rate.

"Edge devices do not have the Intensity Minutes (IM) feature and will not give you IM credit. You would have to wear the Forerunner 935 during your ride to receive credit."

It would be interesting to do two tests. One with the watch and one without the watch.

  • I admit there are occasions where I wear my watch and use my Edge but as my Fenix 6 is only a couple of months old (having upgraded from a 5+) I and scared of damaging it (that will pass). So when I am cycling I put it in my backpack. So I can definitely say the 2 examples I provided were when I was not wearing my watch. However I do have years worth of data that shows Intensity minutes both when I was and wasn't wearing my old Fenix 5.

  • I can only say that the Edge devices do not have that function so how it works needs to be investigated.

If you put your watch in the backpack it is possible for it to register heart rate even if it isn't in any way a real heart rate. Best test is to turn it off. Then it can't register any bogus heart rate data.

I will try to do some tests of this and see if I can figure out how it works. I need to remember to turn off the watch to make sure it doesn't log anything during the test period.

  • I do wear a HR strap when cycling which would be paired to the Fenix & Edge, however I'm pretty sure the watch would not be reading from it if not in an activity

  • The HR strap is only used during an activity. The only exception is the HRM Pro which is an activity tracker and can record intensity minutes, steps etc.

  • Looks like a widespread issue, probably has to do with the Garmin cloud more than to your particular device

  • Looking back at all my data over the years I can't say with 100% accuracy which days I was wearing my watch at the same time as using my Edge, but as a rule of thumb I would always be wearing the Fenix and only putting it in backpack when trail riding as I do have a tendency to have unplanned dismounts ;).

However I can say with absolute certainty that recent data has only been recorded on Edge and last week it worked as I expected but yesterday it did not. It sticks in my mind as I skipped my usual cardio session and did 40 road miles instead so I was wondering why I intensity/max HR looked wrong.

  • Seeing this as well - just did two big days but my 7 day training load is taking a nosedive. The activity and stats are in Garmin Connect on the we and the app, and look correct, but aren't being reflected in reports.

It looks like this starting happening on March 4 - has anyone else seen the same?
