Active Calories" and calories burned from activities don't add up

Same issue as everyone else. Sounds like a gobble gook explanation. Was trying to decide on updating my watch. If they can't do better than this time to move on to a new brand

  • Active calories are the calories burned throughout the day doing something and not just for activities.

Activity calories are the calories burned during activities including the resting calories during the activity time.

  • Same problem for me. Garmin connect shows the correct active calories when I click into the active calories menu but it doesn’t reflect it on my watch.

I did a indoor ride and the ride successfully synced to garmin connect but it didn’t update the watch. Does anyone know of a fix?

  • Could you post a photo of your watch and a screenshot of Garmin Connect, demonstrating the issue? Most likely you are comparing unrelated values.

  • Hello. I added the my fitness pal sync and so the calories menu changed but you can still see the issue on the MFP widget. The watch says 459 active calories which is what it calculated on my wrist while I rode my bike indoors. When I finished the ride Strava sent the workout (recorded by power meter and indoor trainer) to garmin connect and you can see the active calories are accurately reflected as 557. 557 is accurate and I want to override the calories my watch calculates. Is there any way to do that?

    thanks for the help!

  • I just disconnect the MFP connection to show the issue more clearly. Note how the screens below have different calories and active calories:

the first photo is correct. Those are the calories that synced from Strava and the calories that should be on my watch but they aren’t. Very odd

In fact both screenshots are correct, just at different points of time. While the small widget shows the data in real-time, the detailed screen for given day displays the data stored on the remote server at the moment of the last sync. It means when you sync Garmin Connect (tap the double arrow circle symbol at the top right corner of the My Day screen), the values will be identical in the seconds just after the sync is complete.

  • Unfortunately syncing doesn’t fix it. Tried it many times. It stays like this and my watch stays incorrect. Never updates the numbers

I meant the second screenshot you posted. It has nothing to do with your watch. You have just shown two different screen of the daily Calories values, where the smaller widget (on the right side of the image) show the immediate value received from the watch by the phone, while the bigger screen (on the left) shows the last data synced to the Garmin Connect server.

As for the watch - if there is any discrepancy between the values on your watch and in Garmin Connect even immediately after syncing, then there is the possibility that you are either using multiple devices, or in contrary have accidentally created duplicate accounts. That is a very common issue, and it happens easier than you imagine. You could try carefully following in the described order all the instructions from the support document Data is Missing from My Garmin Account After Syncing to resolve the issue. When it does not help, perform the Master Reset of the watch/device - it will have similar effect, but you will need to redo some configuration and customization of the device.

  • Ok I will try to follow these steps. Some other thoughts:

in addition to using phone and indoor trainer for idndoor rides I use a garmin edge 830 to record outdoor rides. I just used it yesterday and the same problem happened. Watch and summary widget on garmin connect never updated, despite the values being up to date when I drill into the summery. This tells me garmin has the correct data on the server but is failing to send to watch.

I use many apps to sync data and im wondering if that’s a problem? Maybe I need to minimize that down to just Strava

    thank you for help!

  • That's what I suspected - you use multiple devices. Possibly you did not enable the Physio TrueUp option on both devices. Also, the values in Garmin Connect, and all connected devices, will match only once you sync both devices. And of course, both devices must use the same account, and you need to assure, no duplicate accounts are used, too.
