Why does the connect App only sync to connect.garmin.com when I open it?

I recently purchased a new phone (went from an older Samsung Galaxy to a newer one) and have noticed that my steps are not showing up on connect.garmin.com unless I open the App on my phone. When I do open the App, I can log into connect.garmin.com and see my latest step count (so guessing not an account issue).

When I was using my old phone, the steps would automatically be sync'd between my Garmin Fenix 5 Plus and my phone, and they would be sync'd to the web. I never left the App open in the background on that phone, so did something change in the App or with permissions in the last 6months/Year?

I use a health site for work and I earn rewards at work by having my data sync to their website. I've lost out on 2 months of rewards because of missing data. I'm hoping I don't need to remember to open the app nightly to sync my data. Being an Android user I also close all apps after I am done, so leaving it up in the background would be a change.

  • You should never close apps. The operating system will handle the lifecycle of the apps. Connect needs to run in the background. Otherwise it can't sync or do anything. Apps should automatically start themselfs if they are closed but I wouldn't trust that to work. There are battery saving functions in many mobile phones that prevents autostarting of apps. So, check that. Turn off battery saving for Connect. It needs to start itself. Especially since you are closing it.

The sync is not continously going. That would drain the battery. It must be triggered in some way. One way is to open the app. Other triggers are that you've saved an activity or are looking at the sleep widget in the watch. It will probably also sync at certain times or maybe every x hour after last time of sync, but I haven't checked that.

  • I assume the app is running in the background, as I can see notifications (texts, emails, etc) on my watch. I checked battery saver and it's not enabled. I must be missing a setting somewhere.

    Thanks for the reply.
