Training Status on Connect App....Again!

Ok....wait till you hear this...

I spent over an hour this morning on a chat with a Garmin Rep. I was trying to get to the bottom of why my rides from the middle of Oct through Dec had not uploaded for Training Status (they were before) but they still populated in the app both indoor and outdoor (and training status just popped up yesterday). Im using a 1030, and a Fenix 6x with the HRM Pro when outdoors. Indoors, watch, HRM all connected to TR through the Wattbike system.

This rep told me the that the VO2 calculations were based on HR (which I already know) and that I have to run my activity on my watch separately from TR indoors or my 1030 outdoors. I kindly explained to her that this method would populate 2 workouts when I only did one, and then all my metrics for the day, week and month would be not only doubled, but inaccurate. She insisted that this was the only way to do it.

I am absolutely baffled that a so-called Garmin representative would even suggest such an idea when they know it only will produce bad data. Personally, Id rather have no data at rather than bad data, but due to the fact that I pay for this equipment and care about my data....Im starting to lose trust in Garmin and its customer service.

Who's got an idea about how to fix this? Im all ears!

  • VO2 max calculations for cycling is based on power and HR.

You will not get a VO2 max from TR. It only supports training load after the activity has synced to Garmin Connect and then to a Garmin device to do the calculation and then back to Garmin Connect.

  • I understand that. So Garmin is saying that the only workaround is to "double load" the data. Which throws every piece of data pretty much out the window. Id rather not have the V02 calculation and keep the data accurate. Im just venting that their response is probably the worst possible solution for this problem.

  • Not to mention that it missed all my outdoor rides on my 1030 from Oct through the end of Nov. Garmin to Garmin.

  • If you want VO2 max you should only use your Garmin 1030 to log the activity for Garmin Connect. Disconnect TR from Garmin Connect. Then everything will be correct. The VO2 max, training load, training effect will work. You can still use TR but just not let it sync with Garmin Connect.

If you don't care about VO2 max you can continue to only use TR and not use Edge 1030 to log. Edge 1030 will be used for calculating the load after TR has synced the activity.

    1. Log your ride with TR and check that it is uploaded to Garmin Connect.
    2. Start your Edge 1030 to make it sync the activity to the Edge to calculate the load.
    3. Sync the Edge again to make it update the load.
  • This is another issue. What do you mean by "it missed"?

  • I had multiple rides outdoors in Oct and Nov that were never registered in the log for V02 when I was clearly above 70% of Max HR. These had nothing to do with TR. And yes, this is another issue.

On the OG issue, all my indoor rides are uploading to the Garmin Connect app, but I dont use my 1030 for indoor rides (dont see the point of the same data), but if that will solve the issue, then Ill give it a try?

  • There has been an issue with calculation of VO2 max that should be solved with the latest software for Edge 1030 (version 13.20). Maybe that is what caused the missing values.

  • I dont know why the Garmin Rep couldn't swallow her pride and tell me that, would've been way easier.

So e7andy, just so Im clear, If I do a TR ride, I will need to upload it (like TR does to Connect automatically), and then your suggesting that I bounce ti back to my 1030? That seems clunky...

  • One would think that my 6x should do the calculation for me?

  • Yes. I might have got some of the details wrong, but that is how I understood it.

Scroll down to "Do Activities Recorded With Third-Party Apps Count Towards Training Status?"

It also says "When using the Tacx Training app or a supported third-party app, you must record them with heart rate for exercise load to be calculated, and with power data for cycling VO2 max to be calculated." so according to that you could get a calculated VO2 max value, but I have no confirmation on that.
